The role
First Nations Curator, Pre‐1914 Frontier Wars Gallery – Affirmative Measures (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander)
Position – APS6 Full Time – Salary $99,734 to $111,701 – Campbell, ACT (relocation support can be considered). This vacancy is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Role
Working closely with the Lead First Nations Curator, the First Nations Curator contributes to the interpretation of the Australian experience of Frontier Wars through exhibition development. The position provides curatorial leadership in research, exhibition interpretation and multimedia visitor experiences, and participates in community engagement associated with developing exhibition content.
Core Responsibilities
- Support the development of overall storyline and themes for the Pre‐1914 Frontier Wars Gallery through best‐practice community engagement and ICIP principles.
- Undertake research into the National Collection and external sources, including potential lenders of exhibition content.
- Contribute to the development and preparation of key documents, including curatorial rationale, concept description, exhibition design brief, concept design, multimedia brief and storyboard.
- Provide content presentations with accurate and detailed historical information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in developing exhibition visitor experience and interpretation, from high‐level concept briefs to detailed content outlines for multimedia experiences.
- Contribute to the development of audio‐visual content with the Exhibition Project Manager and external contractors.
- Supply materials for formative audience evaluation processes throughout development.
- Collaborate with other sections to achieve outcomes specified in the Gallery Development Plan and overall Memorial Business Plan.
- Contribute to community engagement plans, media activities and work with veteran and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholder groups.
- Perform manual handling and movement of objects as required.
Position Eligibility

About the Redevelopment
The Australian War Memorial's gallery redevelopment is the most significant in its history, with a multi‐year multimillion‐dollar project expanding gallery spaces. The new southern extension, Anzac atrium and Enhanced Anzac Hall are delivered, and additional projects are underway. This phase focuses on the Pre‐1914 and Frontier Wars galleries, delivering inclusive and accessible exhibitions based on best‐practice principles.
