Old Parliament House is a heritage building located on a site of great historical significance for all Australians. To mark its centenary in 2027, the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) is developing a suite of innovative programs including an important exhibition about First Nations Peoples’ experience of democracy. This exhibition will support the sharing of First Nations histories and stories through their diverse voices.

ABOUT YOU

You will be a skilled researcher who knows how to tell inspired stories which cross between politics, social history, cultural heritage, and the arts. The curatorial team are highly consultative and community-orientated so the Assistant Curator will enjoy working collaboratively with a wide range of people from all walks of life.

The filling of this vacancy is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under section 8(1) of the ‘Racial Discrimination Act 1975’. This vacancy is only available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait people. This initiative/program is only applicable where the successful applicant will be employed under the Public Service Act 1999. MoAD understands that First Nations candidates may have unique cultural and kinship responsibilities, therefore we provide a flexible working environment. This position may be held on a part time or full-time basis and arrangements for working from home and/or remotely are possible.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Working in a small but dedicated team of curatorial staff under the guidance of the Senior Curator, Centenary Projects, and with the support of a First Nations Advisory Committee, the Assistant Curator will play a pivotal role in the development and delivery of this timely exhibition by:

- Developing and delivering exhibition and interpretive content for onsite and online visitors.
- Carrying out focused research using MoAD’s collection, materials from other institutions, and input from stakeholders, including the public.
- Assessing the provenance, cultural context and significance of objects that might be featured in MoAD exhibitions or added to the collection.
- Working collaboratively with internal teams and external contacts and professionally represent MoAD.
- Representing MoAD at a range of public forums and in the print, radio, television and online media.
