Australian Veteran Health Services
Doctor
Posted: 21 February
Offer description

Experienced GPs are increasingly choosing AVHS because it offers a different kind of GP role—one that values clinical judgement, time, and quality over volume.

Medical Officers are choosing AVHS because it offers the opportunity to practise true continuity‑of‑care general practice with a defined patient cohort—without the pressure of volume‑driven, transactional medicine. At AVHS, you become the support for veterans who often do not have an established regular treating GP or require specialised, consistent care following military service. The model supports longitudinal relationships, comprehensive care planning, and advocacy for patients navigating complex and chronic physical and mental health needs.

This role suits experienced GPs seeking relationship‑based practice, clinical autonomy, and sustainable work without sacrificing professional standards. This is general practice done with time, purpose, and clinical depth.

ABOUT US

Australian Veteran Health Services is a veteran‑led medical practice supporting current and former Australian Defence Force members as they transition to civilian life.

Many veterans experience barriers accessing consistent primary care, particularly care that understands the unique and complex health impacts associated with military service. AVHS exists to address this gap by providing ongoing general practice care, alongside support with DVA‑related health needs, transition medicals, and complex care coordination.

Our clinicians practise medicine that is trauma‑informed, culturally aware, and relationship‑focused, recognising the cumulative impact of military service on health and wellbeing.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Due to continued growth and increasing demand, we are seeking FRACGP‑qualified General Practitioners to join AVHS as treating GPs for veterans.

Based in Deakin and in one of our new, purpose‑built clinical environments designed for modern, multidisciplinary care, you will be a part of a medical practice that provides the majority of ongoing care to a defined veteran patient cohort through clinic‑based consultations and telehealth.

This is a non‑acute general practice role, allowing time for:

· Comprehensive assessments

· Chronic disease management

· Mental health care

· Care coordination and follow‑up

· Advocacy and patient education

You will work within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment supported by experienced nurses, specialists, allied health, and mental health services, while retaining your role as the veteran’s primary treating doctor.

Key Responsibilities:

· Deliver ongoing, relationship‑based primary care

· Manage chronic and complex physical and mental health conditions

· Develop and review care plans aligned with patient needs

· Coordinate referrals to specialists and allied health

· Support veterans navigating DVA‑related health processes

· Maintain high‑quality, compliant clinical documentation

· Collaborate with internal clinical teams to optimise outcomes

Essential Requirements:

* Current General Registration with AHPRA

* Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP)
or Fellowship of ACRRM

* Minimum 5 years’ experience in General Practice

* Strong clinical judgement and written communication skills

* Proficiency with medical software and electronic health records

Desirable:

* Experience in veteran mental health or military-related services.

* Understanding of military culture and service-related health conditions.
