The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest for 2026 Geriatric Medicine Registrar at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
The Royal Hobart Hospital is a tertiary hospital in southern Tasmania, serving a population of 300,000.
This position is suitable for Basic Physician trainees, GP Registrars and as a non-core term for Advanced Trainees in Rehabilitation or Emergency Medicine and is distinct from the Advanced Trainee in Geriatric Medicine position.
The aged care department has an establishment of 9 FTE registrar positions which includes up to 4 advanced trainees in geriatrics, with the remainder being registrars in Geriatric Medicine. These positions are supported by interns in acute geriatrics; and 5 resident medical officers across the subacute services. The successful applicant will be working with a team of junior doctors and Consultants. There is strong collegiality, stability, and energy within the group of 17 geriatricians.
The Aged Care department has 112 inpatient beds - 60 acute beds, 42 subacute beds (Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM)), plus 10 beds for patients with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia requiring slow stream rehabilitation. There is an additional GEM at Home service. The Aged Care specialists provide multiple services to inpatients (including a consultative service and shared care orthogeriatrics model of 10-20 patients), outpatient clinics (including regional TAZREACH Outreach clinics), education to undergraduates/allied health/nursing/postgraduates as well as research. Preferences for rotations will be discussed between the trainee and Director of Clinical Teaching in Aged Care prior to commencement, considering educational objectives.
$134,930 - $189,005 per annum
In addition to base salary -
* Additional 3% base rate on call allowance plus overtime.

Fixed term, full timeday work (part time hours may be considered), working 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours protected training time (pro rata) – effective 2 February 2026 until 1 February 2027 (2 year appointment negotiable).

The Registrar is responsible for the day to day management of private & public inpatients/outpatients and provides afterhours emergency cover at the hospital.
