Tasmanian | The quiet pursuit of the extraordinary

About the Role and Team

The Tasmanian Health Service – North West is seeking motivated and experienced Medical Practitioners to join the Department of Emergency Medicine. This position is based at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH), a modern acute care facility serving the North West of Tasmania and functioning as a University Teaching Hospital for the Rural Clinical School of the University of Tasmania.

This is a 12-month rotational registrar position commencing in February 2026, comprising six months working in the Emergency Department and six months in a supervised Anaesthetics rotation at NWRH. The role is employed and governed by the Emergency Department. While the Anaesthetics component is delivered within an ANZCA-accredited department, this position is not credentialed as an Anaesthetics training post and is not intended for trainees seeking accredited Anaesthetics training time. The Anaesthetics rotation is designed to provide hands-on, supervised anaesthetic experience to support Emergency Medicine training and is ideally suited to ACEM trainees. Opportunities may be available for ACEM trainees to continue Emergency Department training following completion of the Anaesthetics rotation.

Applicants must hold general registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) at the time of commencement.

During the Anaesthetics rotation, registrars will gain exposure to operative anaesthesia, day procedures and scope lists, the acute pain service, and obstetric anaesthesia. Supervision is provided by RANZCA Fellows, and registrars will participate in a 24-hour rotating roster. The hospital performs general, orthopaedic, obstetric and gynaecological, and ENT surgical procedures, with ICU support available for complex post-operative patients. Theatre services provide access to both elective and emergency cases.

The NWRH Emergency Department manages approximately 28,000 presentations annually, with an admission rate of around 28%, and serves as the Regional Trauma Centre for the North West. The department provides inpatient care across a broad range of specialties, including medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and mental health, and acts as a referral centre for several district hospitals, including King Island. The department supports a large outpatient service and provides tertiary outreach services from the Royal Hobart Hospital, including extensive oncology services.

There are currently 14 Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEMs) working alongside other senior clinical staff, providing a high level of direct supervision and teaching. NWRH is an ACEM Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET) hub for the North West of Tasmania, offering opportunities to complete the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate, the Associateship in Intermediate Emergency Medicine, and the Associateship in Advanced Emergency Medicine. Registrars may also participate in reciprocal rural education placements as part of the EMET programme, travelling to remote locations to provide education under FACEM supervision.

The Emergency Department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for twelve months of Emergency Medicine training, including approval for completion of Paediatric Emergency Requirements. The department also holds Advanced Skills Post accreditation in Emergency Medicine for both ACCRM and RACGP trainees, and applications from trainees of these colleges are encouraged.

The award provides generous relocation assistance and residential support. Registrars are also paid ten hours of education time per fortnight (FTE) in addition to the contracted 76 hours.

The North West of Tasmania offers an exceptional lifestyle, with minimal traffic, clean air, and access to beaches, mountains, inland lakes, hiking and cycling trails, and renowned local food and wine. The hospital is located just minutes from the town centre, perched on a hill overlooking the Bass Strait and surrounding countryside, offering a rare opportunity to combine high-quality training with an outstanding quality of life.
