Principal Planner – Natural Hazards | Flood

Are you a technical expert in natural hazards with the strategic vision to lead complex climate change resilience projects? Our client is seeking a Principal Planner – Natural Hazards to provide high-level leadership in risk-based land use planning and policy development.
The Opportunity
Joining the Environment and Sustainability Policy and Planning Department, you will lead the delivery of highly complex natural hazards and climate change adaptation projects. This role is pivotal in ensuring the organization and the community are prepared for future challenges through robust, risk-based land use planning.
Key Responsibilities
* Technical Leadership: Act as the subject matter expert, providing direction to multidisciplinary teams and leadership in integrated natural hazards outcomes.
* Project Management: Lead specialist project teams and external consultants to deliver complex planning initiatives.
* Policy Development: Provide strategic expertise to integrate technical risk assessment outcomes into land use and development policy responses.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate project-based community consultation and build high-level relationships across diverse internal and external stakeholders.
* Expert Review: Provide technical direction to external consultants and undertake rigorous reviews of technical reports to ensure project excellence.
What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a highly capable professional with a deep understanding of natural hazards risk-based land use planning.
Essential Experience & Skills
* Subject Matter Expertise: Substantial knowledge in natural hazards, relevant engineering fields, or climate change adaptation
* Strategic Risk Assessment: Strong capability and experience in leading strategic flood risk assessment and coastal hazard risk assessment projects.
* Policy Integration: Proven ability to integrate technical risk outcomes to inform strategic land use and development policy directions.
* Consultant Management: Experience providing strategic and technical direction to external consultants, including the critical review of technical documentation.
* Legislative Knowledge: High-level experience applying federal, state, and local planning legislation related to risk and resilience.
* Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex environmental concepts into concise, actionable advice for stakeholders.
Qualifications
* Education: Degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
* Licence: Must hold a current "C" Class Driver's Licence.
