We're seeking a sharp, motivated Reporter to support Yahoo News' daily coverage with speed, accuracy, and creativity, on a 12 month fixed term contract.
Reporting to and working under the daily direction of the News Editor, you'll be responsible for delivering news stories set as part of the day's editorial agenda. While you'll be encouraged to pitch ideas, a core part of this role is taking clear instructions and executing briefs efficiently and to a high standard.
As part of the news team, you'll help cover the conversations everyday Australians are having - from real-life stories and internet debates to unique takes on major news events.
You'll collaborate closely with editors and fellow reporters to ensure stories align with Yahoo's editorial standards, tone, and audience needs. The ideal candidate is organised, curious, and reliable - someone who thrives with structure, clear guidance, and fast turnarounds.

Skills and Experience required
For this role, you'll need solid reporting fundamentals, good news sense, and a growing understanding of what performs well with Australian news audiences.
You should be comfortable working to daily briefs and editorial direction, while continuing to build confidence in pitching ideas that align with the team's strategy and audience goals.
Responsibilities
* Write a mix of assigned and pitched news stories each day in line with direction from the News Editor.
* Execute daily briefs accurately, efficiently, and to deadline.
* Research, interview, and fact-check stories to ensure high editorial standards.
* Pitch relevant story ideas that complement the daily news agenda.
* Apply SEO best practices to maximise visibility across search and discover platforms.
* Follow Yahoo's style, tone, and editorial guidelines consistently.
* Keep the audience front of mind by understanding and delivering against the 'user need' of each story.
* Monitor basic performance metrics and respond constructively to editorial feedback.
* Contribute to team planning through weekly news meetings and editorial discussions.
Job Requirements
* 2-4 years of experience in digital journalism, ideally within news, lifestyle, or culture.
* Strong editorial judgement and a portfolio of engaging, high‐quality digital reporting.
* A sharp eye for what's trending - able to identify stories and angles that resonate with online audiences.
* Ability to quickly identify and execute angles that align with Yahoo News' tone and audience expectations.
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to tell stories that inform, inspire, and connect.
* Professional, adaptable, and collaborative, thriving in a fast‐paced, creative newsroom environment.
* Passion for innovative digital storytelling, from social‐first formats to emerging multimedia opportunities.
