The Bureau’s Data and Digital group (DDG) is responsible for the ICT systems the Bureau relies on to provide trusted, reliable and responsive weather, water, climate, ocean and space weather services for Australia – all day, every day.
Our team is responsible for the sustainment and improvement of the Bureau’s Identity, Windows Server, Messaging and Azure Cloud systems. Whilst primarily responsible for Microsoft systems, these underpin all other technologies used at the Bureau – extending our influence to these other technologies as well.
The team is a senior escalation point for all other technical teams, including the service desk, midrange, networking and application teams. Because of this, the team consists only of Senior System Administrators that are demonstrated experts in their craft.
The team is charged with proactively driving change within the organisation, both technical and business change. To achieve this, they are required to maintain advanced organisational change management and communications skills. The team are mostly working together to address issues and engage executive, architecture and planning teams, but on occasion, team members may be required to operate on individual assignments.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer to join our expert team, contribute their knowledge and work closely alongside fellow experts.
To be successful in the role you will:
* Bring with you and contribute extensive hands-on experience and expertise in other enterprise grade Microsoft technologies. Applicants must:
o Have strong generalist Windows Server experience
o Have a deep working knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP
o Have a deep working knowledge of Group Policy, including the ability to interpret and safely modify highly complex Group Policy
o Have strong PowerShell and automation experience
o Have strong Certificate Authority / PKI experience
o Have experience managing virtualisation stacks (VMWare / Hyper-V)
o Have experience with hybrid identity concepts and tools, such as Entra ID, Entra Connect and Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM)
* Highly regarded applicants will also:
o Have experience administering and auditing Azure Cloud subscriptions
o Have experience maintaining the Azure Portal elements of an Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environment (not SOE management)
* Have demonstrated experience with complex IT environments where critical thinking, creative design and proactive planning was essential;
* Have demonstrated ability to diagnose complex issues in large, interdependent systems. Be able to self-study and learn-by-investigation;
* Have experience supporting mission-critical systems, including participation in escalations and high-priority incident response.
* Have a good understanding of adjacent technology stacks (Networking, Firewalls, Proxies, VPNs, Endpoint configuration and M365 services) and how they interact with platforms managed by the team;
* Understand applicable Microsoft best practices and patterns, design and implementation concepts and principles, and specific considerations for their implementation in an Australian Government agency;
* Be aware of the PSPF, Essential 8, and how they practically apply to an IT environment;
* Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, both with technical and business stakeholders. Be able to adopt non-technical concepts and processes, understand them and see them through to completion;
