About the role:
The City of Ballarat is seeking an experienced and pragmatic IT Architect to play a pivotal role in shaping and guiding Council's technology landscape.
As Council's inaugural architecture role, the ICT Architect will establish foundational architecture practices and provide authoritative technical advice across enterprise, solution, application, technical and business architecture disciplines.
Working in a cloud-first, vendor-heavy environment, this role bridges business strategy and technology delivery, ensuring Council's ICT environment is scalable, secure, resilient, and aligned to organisational objectives and community outcomes.
You will work closely with the ICT leadership team, ICT delivery and support team, ICT project teams, business stakeholders, and external vendors to develop current and future-state architectures, technology roadmaps, and governance frameworks that support effective decision-making and sustainable investment.
This is a hands-on role that combines strategic thinking with practical delivery, supporting major initiatives while progressively uplifting architecture maturity across the organisation.
About you:
You are an experienced technology professional with strong architectural capability and the ability to operate confidently across both technical and business domains.
You bring a pragmatic, value-driven approach to architecture, with experience working in SaaS, IaaS and PaaS centric and cloud-based environments and partnering effectively with vendors and managed service providers.
You will demonstrate:
* Proven experience in enterprise, solution, or technical architecture roles
* Strong understanding of cloud platforms, SaaS, IaaS and PaaS solutions, integration patterns, and data architecture
* The ability to translate business goals into practical, scalable technology solutions
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in plain language
* Sound judgement, balancing immediate operational needs with long-term strategic outcomes
* Experience establishing or maturing architecture practices in low-to-medium maturity environments
* Accreditation in practicing the SFIA professional skills at the required competency level as specified in the position description (highly desirable)
