Primary objective
Lead the NT Health Clinical Innovation and Research Unit to embed high-quality and effective research governance processes, practices
and frameworks across NT Health to ensure research is conducted in a safe, responsible, ethical and scientifically sound environment,
and to drive implementation of national clinical research reform initiatives.
Context statement
The NT Health Clinical Innovation and Research Unit (CIRU) is the central point of contact for all stakeholders undertaking research in NT
Health and provides governance, support and capacity building opportunities for clinical researchers. CIRU hosts the NT Health Clinical
Trial Coordination Unit and NT Health Research Governance Office. Managing a multi-disciplinary team this position provides strategic
and operational leadership of the CIRU and the implementation of national clinical research reform initiatives.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide support to the Director to promote and support clinical research and innovation and data management across NT Health
2. Manage a multi-disciplinary team to provide strategic and operational leadership of the NT Health CIRU and expert advice in relation
to clinical research within the scope of the role, ensure all legal, contractual and financial requirements are in place for clinical research
conducted at an NT Health site
1. Provide clinical expertise in the development, review and implementation of research and innovation guidelines, protocols and
procedures that enhance clinical safety, quality and performance of research undertaken in NT Health
1. Implement and manage an NT wide research application and management system and provide a monitoring and audit oversight for
research activities within NT Health
1. Undertake quality improvement activities to enhance research governance, conduct training and information sessions to build
research capability and work with key clinicians/stakeholders, to ensure the full benefits of research and innovation is realised in NT
Health
1. Provide NT representation on NT and national working groups to inform national policy and guidelines to improve the Australian and
NT clinical research environment
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
1. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Relevant qualifications in professional stream and registration for practice with the relevant Board of Australia.
2. Experience in clinical research/governance with in-depth knowledge of Australian research regulatory and legislative requirements
1. Demonstrated high-level leadership and managerial skills including strategic thinking, practical people management and the ability to
successfully support change in a complex clinical research, research governance and research data environment
4. Proven high level communication and interpersonal skills, including well developed negotiation and conflict management skills, with
significant experience working in a team environment to achieve positive outcomes.
1. Demonstrated ability to research, analyse and prepare a range of briefings, reports and recommendations to inform decision making,
best practice, policy and program development
1. High order of initiative including the ability to plan, prioritise and complete high volume workload with changing priorities,
independently, under limited direction, in order to meet program schedules and deadlines;
Desirable
1. Post-graduate qualifications in public health, leadership/management, research or similar

1. Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia or eligible for same.
2. Demonstrated high-level leadership and management skills including strategic thinking, practical people management, and the ability
to successfully support change in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment.
3. Demonstrated ability to analyse service performance and implement evidence based initiatives to improve client outcomes,
program functions, and organisational efficiency.
4. Demonstrated ability to facilitate a positive work environment, modifying work practices where necessary to meet the needs of
healthcare consumers and staff.
5. Demonstrated use of effective communication skills to maximise productive working relationships, including with relevant specialists
and executive management, and manages conflict to promote co-operation, teamwork and understanding.
6. Demonstrates and applies highly developed knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural issues, influences and sensitivities
that influence health care provision for individuals and groups.
Desirable
1. Graduate Diploma, or equivalent, beyond entry to practice relevant to specialty area.
