Advance evidence-based music therapy for children with complex needs. Provide a sense of normalcy and play within our complex clinical environment. CRVCID No.719912. This is a fixed term fulltime appointment for a period of 2 years with the possibility of extension(s) and/or permanency. The successful applicants' responsibilities will be allocated to medical specialties (Neonatology, Adolescent Medicine, and/or Oncology) based on relevant skills and experience.
About the role: We are seeking friendly, passionate and suitably experienced Music Therapists to join our Occupational Therapy team. In this role, you will coordinate, implement and evaluate music therapy services for children and young people with complex needs across an allocated caseload which may include:
* Neonates: A new opportunity for an experienced Music Therapist to deliver clinical music therapy services to our smallest patients and their families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
* Adolescent Medicine: A new opportunity for an experienced Music Therapist to provide clinical music therapy services to young people within the Adolescent Medicine service.
* Oncology: A well-established role at Perth Children's Hospital where Music Therapists deliver clinical music therapy services to children and families on the oncology ward. Sessions may be delivered individually, with siblings, or in groups.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will use specialised music therapy assessment and intervention approaches to support children, young people and their families. Through music-based activities such as singing, instrument play and musical routines, you will help support connection, coping and wellbeing.
Responsibilities
* Developing, delivering and actively participating in evaluation of innovative music therapy treatment programs at an advanced level in allocated clinical specialty area.
* Consulting with community agencies and non-government organisations regarding education, client referrals and music therapy specific health promotion as required.
* Providing supervision to other music therapy service staff as required - may include supervision of arts/health musicians and volunteers attending PCH.
* Contributing to music therapy Quality Improvement activities and research projects as directed.
Qualifications
To be eligible for this role, you must possess a Masters Degree in Music Therapy and provide evidence of professional registration with the Australian Music Therapy Association Inc. prior to appointment.
About our Team
Based at Perth Children's Hospital, and part of the Occupational Therapy Department, our dedicated Music Therapy team has provided services to children aged 0–16 years for more than 10 years. Services are delivered to both inpatients, as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, and outpatients.
Music therapy supports children and families to achieve physical, emotional, cognitive, communication and social goals by helping to:
* Reduce anxiety and support relaxation and regulate physiological and emotional states.
* Assist with pain management and emotional regulation.
* Help children express emotions related to illness or hospitalization.
* Strengthen parent–child bonding through shared musical experiences.
* Experience a sense of normalcy and play within the clinical environment.
