Your Role

An exciting role exists to join the team at Catholic Education Office in the position of Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator, to commence on 19 January 2026 or as negotiated with the successful applicant. This is a full time continuing position for 40 hours per week.

The successful applicant will oversee Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) functions across the Mackay and Western Regions, providing strategic leadership and expert guidance to ensure compliance and achieve organisational safety outcomes. This role involves working collaboratively with principals and administrative staff to maintain consistent communication and coordination of WHS and risk management matters, while fostering a proactive culture of safety and accountability. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of WHS legislation, policies and procedures, along with strong strategic planning abilities and excellent communication skills.

The position is based in Mackay and requires regular travel to schools and colleges across the Mackay and Western Regions.

Typical duties include, but are not limited:

* Provide proactive and responsive Work Health and Safety (WHS) consultation, support, and guidance to school communities through regular site visits, fostering a culture of safety and wellbeing.
* Coordinate and delivery WHS induction programs for new staff and facilitate annual refresher training for existing staff, ensuring alignment with diocesan and legislative requirements.
* Facilitate targeted safety education sessions (e.g., manual handling, chemical safety, grounds and cleaning staff updates) to promote hazard awareness and risk mitigation.
* Lead scheduled site inspections, incidents investigations, and hazard reviews, ensuring accurate documentation and follow-up using the Riskman system.
* Prepare comprehensive reports on WHS trends, incidents, and emerging risks for submission to the WHS Manager and relevant committees.
* Contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of WHS policies and procedures, prioritising the safety of staff, students, contractors, and visitors.
* Support the Administration of Medication Guidelines through training, compliance monitoring, and incident review.
* Deliver fire safety training using the approved Rockhampton Catholic Education package, including evacuation protocols and first response procedures.
* Ensure school-specific emergency management training is conducted, including evacuation and lockdown procedures.
* Maintain accurate records of all WHS-related training and ensure accessibility for audit and compliance purposes.

* A relevant tertiary qualification is desirable, with appropriate experience or equivalent knowledge, qualifications and experience relevant to this role.
