The SAP Functional Architect is a pivotal role responsible for designing, governing, and evolving the enterprise SAP landscape to reliably support business processes end-to-end (e.g., record-to-report, order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, hire-to-retire). This role ensures that SAP solutions align with business requirements while adhering to architectural principles, security, scalability, integration, and cost constraints. The architect translates complex business capabilities into SAP-centric solution architecture, balancing standard SAP best practices with pragmatic delivery considerations across multiple teams and vendors.
This position requires a deep understanding of SAP modules, strong analytical skills, and the ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams. The SAP Functional Architect creates business value by mitigating transformation risks, accelerating delivery through reusable patterns, minimizing customization, improving integration quality, controlling Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and enabling reliable operations and upgrades.
Strategic & Architectural Leadership
* Define and maintain the SAP target architecture and roadmap across application, integration, data, security, and platform layers, with a strong focus on SAP S/4HANA transformations and cloud/hybrid operations.
* Establish architectural principles and guardrails, including clean core strategies, extension strategies, integration patterns, and master data governance alignment.
* Own SAP solution standards and reference architectures for common business capabilities (e.g., finance postings, pricing, inventory, HR events, workflow, reporting).
* Influence investment choices by providing comprehensive TCO, risk, and delivery impact assessments for SAP initiatives and solution options.
* Ensure SAP architecture aligns seamlessly with the overall enterprise architecture, including capability maps, domain architecture, and established standards.
Operational & Technical Execution
* Provide expert architectural support to delivery teams, ensuring that designs are executable, testable, and meet business objectives.
* Participate in demand intake and solutioning processes to accurately size, estimate, and de-risk new initiatives.
* Support release planning and cutover readiness activities for SAP deployments.
* Collaborate with SAP operations teams to ensure architectural designs meet stringent operability requirements, including monitoring, backup/restore, and performance.
* Design end-to-end SAP solution architectures, encompassing functional, technical, and non-functional requirements.
* Architect robust integration solutions between SAP and non-SAP systems, utilizing APIs, events, and middleware.
* Define appropriate extension approaches, whether in-app or side-by-side on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), including ABAP RESTful and Fiori/UI extensions [1].
* Drive data architecture alignment, focusing on master data management, replication strategies, and analytics requirements [1].
* Guide performance and scalability design, including HANA sizing and interface throughput optimization [1].
* Ensure security-by-design principles are embedded, covering Identity and Access Management (IAM), role design, Segregation of Duties (SoD), encryption, and audit logging [1].
Stakeholder Management & Governance
* Translate complex business requirements into clear architectural decisions and effectively communicate trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders [1].
* Coordinate and collaborate across diverse teams, including SAP functional, technical, Basis, security, and data teams.
* Manage vendor and System Integrator (SI) architectural alignment through rigorous review of deliverables and adherence to established standards.
* Lead architecture governance processes, including design reviews and maintaining architecture decision records (ADRs).
* Ensure compliance with regulatory controls such as SOX, privacy regulations, and data retention policies.
* Mentor and guide junior engineers and consultants, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
* Lead communities of practice for SAP and integration, promoting knowledge sharing and best practices.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
* 10+ years of progressive experience in SAP implementations, with at least 5 years in an SAP Architect role.
* Proven expertise in designing and implementing SAP solutions across multiple modules (e.g., FI/CO, SD, MM, PP, HR).
* Extensive experience with SAP S/4HANA, including greenfield implementations, brownfield conversions, or system transformations.
* Strong understanding of SAP integration technologies (e.g., SAP PI/PO, CPI, OData, APIs).
* Demonstrated experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure, in the context of SAP deployments.
* Deep knowledge of data migration strategies, data governance, and master data management within SAP environments.
* Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate with senior stakeholders.
* Ability to lead workshops, facilitate discussions, and drive consensus among diverse teams.
