Education Assistant - Special Needs Branch: Spearwood Alternative School Division: Independent Public School - South Metropolitan Education Region.
Salary: Level 2 / 3, $ - $ per hour (EA (Gov) GA ****).
Work Type: Permanent - Part Time.
FTE: Location: Spearwood.

This is a permanent part-time position commencing Term 1, ****.
Spearwood Alternative School (SAS) has a student population of just under 100 students kindergarten to year 6.
Rather than a geographical boundary families are attracted, based on their resonance with the ethos of the school – Education Through Community : Community Through Education.
The grounds of SAS are extensive, including 'wild' areas for kids' play and productive, edible gardens – living classrooms.
A comprehensive curriculum has been constructed with a focus on Education for Sustainability and issues of social activism.
Learner-centred learning, facilitated by passionate, talented teachers working democratically with citizens of the school community, ensures a vibrant, exciting learning program that extends children's wonder and curiosity through scaffolded learning, thinking frameworks and considered pedagogical approaches.

As an Education Assistant you will, under teacher direction, assist in the implementation of specialised education programmes and should maintain a supportive, inclusive education programme to meet the specific needs of students.
The successful applicant will display a commitment to working collaboratively and building positive relationships with students, parents, staff and the wider community.
The successful applicant will ideally have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be versatile, work well under pressure and be a team player.
You should possess a calm, positive and professional manner and have the ability to use your initiative to assist the teacher with the general care and well-being of students and maintenance of the learning environment.
You should also have a strong knowledge of a range of evidence-based techniques for learning and behaviour and have some experience or knowledge of disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is highly desirable.

A two (2) page statement addressing the following selection criteria as outlined in the attached JDF: Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programmes, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programmes, including special education and therapy programmes where these have been implemented.
Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programmes to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programmes, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programmes.
Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
