We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Scientist to join our Molecular Microbiology laboratory team. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop practical expertise in modern diagnostic techniques within a supportive and high-quality laboratory environment. Comprehensive training will be provided across laboratory-specific platforms and technologies, enabling the successful applicant to build broad capability while contributing to essential diagnostic services.
Key Responsibilities
* Performing a range of diagnostic molecular microbiology laboratory techniques.
* Completing all duties relevant to each scientific shift or designated laboratory section, in accordance with departmental procedures and manuals.
* Maintaining high laboratory quality standards by complying with departmental quality management system requirements.
* Adhering to occupational health and safety policies and procedures to ensure the safety of yourself, colleagues, and others in the workplace.
* Delivering reliable and efficient service to meet the needs of both internal and external customers.
* Providing training and support to other staff members as required.
* Maintaining professional development through participation in scientific meetings, reviewing scientific literature, and preparing or delivering continuing education presentations at staff meetings.
* Undertaking special duties as required to support the organisation's strategic objectives and contribute to the effective operation of individual laboratory sections or the organisation overall.
Comprehensive training will be provided in all laboratory-specific skills. The successful applicant will gain hands-on experience across a range of modern molecular microbiology techniques and laboratory instrumentation.
What we are looking for
Suitable applicants will be enthusiastic and possess strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills, excellent time management, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a busy team. A high level of commitment to laboratory turnaround times, customer service, accuracy of processing, and achievement of laboratory goals is essential.
The successful applicant must be available to work across weekday shifts, rostered weekends, and public holidays as required. Current shift start times range between 7:00 am and 11:00 am, depending on assigned testing rosters. Occasional Saturday work is required either as part of a Tuesday–Saturday roster or as overtime following a standard Monday–Friday shift.
To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:
* A degree in a relevant scientific discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.
* Previous experience in molecular microbiology or general microbiology techniques (highly regarded but not essential).
* Proficiency and confidence using Microsoft Excel.
