General Manager – Technical & Professional Standards

The Australian Property Institute is the peak national body for property professionals in Australia - setting the benchmark for ethical practice, technical excellence, and professional accountability across the sector.
We're looking for a principled, sharp-minded executive to lead the Technical and Professional Standards function. This is a pivotal role at the intersection of law, policy, professional governance, and member service and a genuine opportunity to shape the standards that define a profession.
About the Role
Reporting to the CEO, you will lead a dedicated team and serve as Secretary to the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC), with accountability across four key areas:
* Member Conduct & Complaints - lead end-to-end complaints and disciplinary processes with rigour and procedural fairness
* Professional Standards - own the lifecycle of API's Rules of Conduct, practice standards, and technical guidance
* Policy & Advocacy - provide authoritative technical input to government, regulators, and standards forums
* Professional Standards Scheme - administer the PSS and maintain a risk-based assurance program
What You'll Bring
Experience & Skills
* 8–10+ years in professional standards, regulatory, compliance, legal, or policy leadership - ideally within a professional association, statutory body, or regulated industry
* Demonstrated experience managing end-to-end conduct and complaints processes, including committee secretariat functions
* Strong technical writing skills across standards, guidance notes, policy submissions, and board reports
* Sound working knowledge of administrative law: procedural fairness, natural justice, reasons for decision
* Credible senior-level engagement with government, regulators, and professional bodies
* Proven people leadership and team development capability
Education
* Degree in law, property, valuation, planning, public policy, or a related discipline (essential)
* Postgraduate qualification in law, regulatory practice, governance, or valuation (highly desirable)
* Membership of API, AICD, or a relevant professional body (advantageous)
