Primary objective
The finance officer is responsible for provision of quality financial service and support to internal and external clients
including handling of prisoner private monies and associated financial management for Darwin Correctional Centre.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Management of prisoner private monies including receipting, cash payments, discharge monies and prisoner earnings.
2. Reconciliation of the cheque and cash advances held by Darwin Correctional Centre.
3. Assist the Manager Prisoner Monies and Business Support with procurement, funds and budget management issues.
4. Handle a range of enquiries, face to face, telephone or electronic and provide clear, timely, practical information and
guidance in accordance with relevant NT Government Legislation and Departmental Policies.
5. Contribute to fostering and developing a work environment of quality, customer focused service delivery.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience in cash management and handling including reconciliations, financial management and revenue
collection/reporting.
2. Demonstrated experience in confidential support functions and office administration procedures.
3. Proven skills in the effective use of computerised accounting systems and spreadsheet applications including Mainframe
for the delivery of client services.
4. A proven ability to source, interpret and apply legislation and policy pertaining to finance functions.
5. Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, using initiative and sound judgement and manage
priorities and deliver quality outcomes in a changing environment with tight deadlines.
6. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures with an awareness of multicultural issues and their
impact in a custodial environment.
7. Knowledge and understanding of custodial operations in the Northern Territory and understanding of the requirements
and limitations of working within a complex secure environment.
