Overview
Macquarie University is seeking an experienced Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer with a focus on health services research for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence. The role aims to apply advanced AI skills to projects that improve health systems and outcomes for aged care residents.
About the Role
Be part of a national research initiative addressing deprescribing of medications for older adults in Residential Aged Care (RAC). The successful candidate will help develop an AI-augmented digital platform (AiCT-Med) powered by machine learning models trained on large aged care datasets. The platform identifies deprescribing opportunities, delivers personalised medication recommendations, and supports informed decision-making by residents, families, and care teams. The role will also involve analysing large administrative health datasets and contributing to research publications, presentations, and grant applications.
Responsibilities
- Develop and integrate AI components of the AiCT-Med platform, including fine-tuning/training and system design.
- Analyse large administrative health datasets and contribute to research outputs and grant applications.
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and engage with a broad range of stakeholders.
About You / Qualifications
- A PhD in Computer Science or Software Engineering or Computational Statistics, or a Master’s qualification in a relevant field and/or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience with complex health datasets, data cleaning/manipulation, and data pipelines (ETL) for analysis.
- Excellent communication skills for liaising with staff, management, healthcare providers, and external stakeholders.
- Experience and interest in applied healthcare research and knowledge of the Australian healthcare system.
- Strong programming skills in Python and R (including PyTorch and TensorFlow).
- Experience using AI techniques including LLMs, NLP, and ML ensembles in healthcare, and in developing/deploying ML models on Microsoft Azure.
- A strong research track record with peer‑reviewed publications and experience contributing to grant funding applications.
Level and Perks
- Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A) base salary $86,970 - $117,108
- Research Fellow (Level B) base salary $123,435 - $146,044 (appointment level based on experience)
- Appointment type : Full-time or part-time (Pro-rata rates apply for part-time); fixed-term position for 2 years (with possible extension)
- Location : Macquarie University Wallumattagal Campus (North Ryde)
Desirable (for all levels)
- Hands-on experience deploying ML models in cloud-based infrastructure and using frameworks such as Hugging Face Transformers, LangChain, LlamaIndex, etc.
- Experience with LLMs solutions in healthcare settings and relevant web frameworks (e.g., RShiny, FastAPI, Flask, Django).
- Experience with MLOps tools (e.g., Docker, MLflow, Kubernetes) and leading health-focused projects.
