The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Neurology is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a position as Staff Specialist in Neurology, at 7.6 hours per fortnight (0.1 FTE).
We seek personable colleagues to build our growing department with interests and skills that complement the current mix of specialists, who will be a valued part of our group, provide excellent care for both outpatients and inpatients and contribute to the training, teaching and research aspects of the department.
Who are we?
The Royal Hobart Hospital is one of Australia's oldest hospitals, serving as the largest hospital and tertiary referral centre for Tasmania, with around 450 overnight beds and 90 day beds. As the state's the major clinical teaching and research hospital, RHH collaborates closely with the University of Tasmania and has links to interstate institutions. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.
The Department of Neurology runs a large inpatient and consult service in neurology and stroke, operates both general and subspecialty outpatient clinics, provides comprehensive neurophysiological testing and has a pivotal role in neurology training (as part of the Victorian/Tasmania advanced training group) and teaching for the University of Tasmania. The Department currently employs 10 staff specialists (plus 2 visiting neurologists), 4 registrars (plus a rotating registrar from a general medicine), 2 resident medical officers, 2 nurses, 3 neurophysiology scientists and 5 administrative staff. * Specialist care of outpatients, which may include a combination of both general neurology and subspecialty clinics and ambulatory care roles, based on the applicant's interests and experience
* Direct care and consult advice for inpatients in neurology, including after hours on call work on a pro rata basis. The latter includes acute stroke care, with options for referral for endovascular clot retrieval at RHH
* Performance of neurological procedures and testing, including one or more of EEG reporting, NCS/EMG testing, botulinum toxin administration, ambulatory care procedures, baclofen pump refills and/or managing implantable devices such a deep brain stimulators and vagus nerve stimulators.
* Contribution to quality assurance, audit and research programs within the department and/or the University of Tasmania
* Training and teaching of advanced trainees in neurology, basic physician trainees, other junior staff, nursing staff, allied health staff and medical students
* Effective liaison with other professionals, including relevant other departments (such as intensive care, neurosurgery, vascular surgery and paediatrics), allied health and nursing staff, and local general practitioners

Salary
Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award
A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available. (A fractional position would be pro rata of base salary, eg., 0.1 for 0.1 FTE.)
* Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available, at pro rata for fractional appointees:
* Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
* Continuing professional development allowance of $16,974 pro rata per annum.
* Relocation allowance, including short term accommodation on arrival.
* On call allowance % of Base Salary (for example, 8% of base salary if 1 in 5 on call, 3% if 1 in 10 on call)
* Call back and disruption allowances as per current Award.
* And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment
Permanent, part-time day work (with on-call), working 7.6 hours per fortnight commencing from 1 August 2025.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.
Essential Requirements
* Holds specialist registration; or
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
* Conviction checks in the following areas:
o Crimes of violence
o Sex related offences
o Serious drug offences
o Crimes involving dishonesty
* Identification check
* Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable Requirements
* Develop sub-specialty interest and clinic that complements others in the department
* Participation in electroencephalogram (EEG) reporting and/or nerve conduction studies (NCS)/electromyography (EMG) testing
* Participation in teaching medical students, undergraduates, and neurology advanced trainees, with option of a clinical title with the University of Tasmania
* Current or future research interest
* Specialist qualification for inpatient and outpatient care of neurological patients, including participation in after-hours on-call roster and care of general neurological problems
