Overview

This is a Permanent Part-time opportunity (14 hours per week) based at Clarence Street, South Brisbane within the Mater Young Adult Health Centre. As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Worker, you’ll support young people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds who are experiencing harms related to alcohol and other drugs.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll walk alongside young people and their families, providing culturally secure and trauma-informed care to help them achieve their goals and build positive connections in their community. You will provide culturally sensitive outreach, engagement, and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, delivering alcohol and other drug interventions including assessment, brief intervention, counselling, and harm minimisation strategies.

You will facilitate both group and individual sessions to support personal goals, resilience, and community connection, while also providing case management, referrals, and advocacy to address the holistic needs of young people. Building and maintaining strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and service providers will be central to your work, alongside contributing to treatment planning and collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team.

About you / Qualifications

You are a grounded and compassionate professional who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. You bring strong communication skills, the ability to build trust, and experience working in youth, community, or alcohol and other drug services. To be successful in this role, you will have:

- Identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
- A minimum Diploma, preferably in Alcohol and Other Drugs, Youth Work, Community Services, or another Human Services field.
- A current Blue Card (Working with Children Check), unless exempt as a registered health practitioner.
- The ability to obtain a criminal history check.
- A current Queensland C Class driver’s licence and the ability to operate an organisation vehicle.
- A current First Aid certificate (minimum Emergency Care Course, St John’s Ambulance).
- Willingness to participate in an on-call roster providing after-hours support for residential services.
- Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community. Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.
- Demonstrated understanding of the barriers of access to healthcare experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Knowledge of and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
