Software Engineering Manager - Ubuntu Linux Kernel

Canonical is a leading open‑source company that worldwide distributes Ubuntu. Our Ubuntu Linux kernels are used in public cloud, AI, engineering, IoT and more. We are seeking an experienced manager or technical lead to drive the delivery and support of all Ubuntu Linux kernels. The role is fully remote, with distributed teams worldwide.

Responsibilities

* Lead a distributed team of software engineers in your region, focusing on delivery of Ubuntu Linux kernels.
* Take ownership of specific kernel areas, such as:
o Working with silicon or cloud partners to optimise kernels for their environments.
o Ensuring Ubuntu Linux runs on a wide range of hardware platforms.
o Defining and enforcing quality control standards.
o Managing security threat mitigation for the kernel.
o Automating build, test, and delivery processes.
* Collaborate with other Canonical teams, the open‑source community, and commercial partners.


Qualifications

* Significant programming experience in C (Python, Golang or other languages highly regarded).
* Substantial experience with OS kernel internals; Linux experience highly valued.
* Proven experience managing or leading a team of software engineers.
* Ability to coordinate multiple teams across technical domains.
* Familiarity with version control (git).
* Experience with software packaging; direct Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience a plus.
* Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
* Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks).


Nice‑to‑have

* Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
* Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and low‑level system engineering.
* Background in driving CI/CD and process automation.
* Public involvement with an open‑source project.
