The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Family Violence Prevention Unit (FVPU), a program within the Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. In this role, you will deliver culturally appropriate legal support to clients facing family violence. It requires strong legal skills, autonomy, and cultural sensitivity.
* Provide culturally appropriate legal advice and court representation in family violence, civil, care and protection, and family law matters.
* Support and effectively communicate with vulnerable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, including those in crisis or with complex needs.
* Attend Duty Lawyer services at Local Courts for domestic and family violence cases.
* Maintain up-to-date legal knowledge, manage files and data accurately, and adapt to legal practice systems and technologies.
* Work collaboratively within a team, manage a high caseload, and maintain professional and ethical standards.
* Contribute to community legal education, stakeholder engagement, and law reform initiatives as directed.
Who Are We Looking For?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
* Strong understanding of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with respect or cultural practices.
* Knowledge of family and domestic violence dynamics, particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities.
* Legal qualifications with a current (or immediately obtainable) Practising Certificate.
* Demonstrated ability to identify legal issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander clients and deliver quality legal representation.
* Excellent communication, time management, legal research, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage a diverse workload independently.
* Desirable: Experience in family law, care and protection, or domestic violence matters, and court advocacy across various jurisdictions.
