We're seeking a Senior Claims Specialist, Workers' Compensation & Personal Injury to join our team, focused on reserving for complex workers' compensation and personal injury matters.
You will manage a portfolio of personal injury claims (primarily excess‐of‐loss workers' compensation) with considerable autonomy, primarily focusing on detailed physical and psychological injury loss assessment, setting accurate reserves and conducting ongoing reserve reviews for seriously injured individuals with long‐term entitlements.
The ideal candidate has hands‐on, deep technical experience independently reserving long‐term, often catastrophic, workers' compensation or personal injury claims. You'll join an experienced team and deepen your expertise across a wide range of complex losses.
Key responsibilities
* Managing personal injury claims, primarily from Australian excess workers compensation risks, including:
* Assessing new notifications and claims, determining policy coverage, setting effective strategies and escalating technical issues as needed.
* Consistent adherence to Liberty's documented claim handling requirements, reserving philosophy and watch list/reserve pipeline processes.
* Undertaking short and long‐term detailed physical and psychological injury loss assessments based on medical and rehabilitation reports, economic loss data and anticipated future care having regard to individual circumstances and likely outcomes over the long‐term for workers with significant injuries.
* Setting accurate, reliable and considered reserves for indemnity and fee purposes for a portfolio of personal injury claims (often complex and long‐term in nature) and reviewing reserves on a regular basis to ensure adequacy.
* Working with/influencing clients to inform claim strategies (both above and below Liberty's attachment point).
* Engaging with the Claims Recoveries Manager to ensure all avenues for recovery/contribution etc. are considered and pursued in conjunction with Liberty's (re)insured.
* Providing instructions to external service providers with respect to coverage, investigation and ultimate settlement of claims.
* Participating from time to time in mediation / arbitration meetings and settlement discussions.
* Ensuring that internal and external stakeholders and Liberty clients consistently receive a high level of claims service that differentiates Liberty from its competitors.
* Providing information to management on the existence or development of critical losses and advising relevant trends within the portfolio. Working with others to review, refine and enhance Liberty's wordings in response to claims trends and lessons learned.
* Working closely with Underwriting, Actuarial, Finance (the "integrated business unit approach") to ensure seamless delivery of underwriting and claims services, raise Liberty's profile and assist in both account retention and new business opportunities.
About you
* Ideally legally qualified. Current/past practice in personal injury (preferred highly desirable). Senior Associate / Special Counsel experience in plaintiff or defendant personal injury teams is ideal.
* Or significant demonstrable claims experience reserving complex and catastrophic workers compensation and personal injury claims — including long‐term and lifetime cost estimation.
* Significant relevant industry experience (not junior reserving). Candidates with extensive catastrophic reserving experience and strong technical capability are sought.
* Practical familiarity with Australia's workers' compensation schemes or prior experience in excess‐of‐loss workers' compensation is desirable but not essential.
* High level of attention to detail, excellent analytical capability and strong commercial judgement.
* Comfortable explaining technical issues clearly to clients and brokers; strong negotiation, influencing and relationship‐building skills.
* Proven resilience, time management, organisational skills and ability to manage a complex portfolio.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office and claims management systems.
