About the role: You'll be joining one of the dedicated teams that primarily work on Xero's mobile apps. We are currently hiring for two Senior Backend Engineer roles. Ownership covers the global signup flow, including handling in-app subscriptions, purchases, and all integrations involved, or working on invoicing and contacts management, with a current focus on building functionality for the US market. Our mobile teams are multi-disciplinary, with specialists in iOS, Android, and Backend Engineering within a single team, collaborating to craft software for Xero's native mobile products.
Our teams are distributed across Australia and New Zealand, collaborating with Design, Marketing and Product. This has enabled achievements such as Apple's "App of the Day" in April and May 2025. We focus on delivering value to customers by building reliable and scalable app features, continuously improving through research, experiments, health monitoring, and prototyping. We're involved in every step of the product journey for Xero's millions of users.
We're looking for someone who can move the needle on results, help others grow, and play a crucial role in architectural and implementation decisions, while mentoring fellow developers.
What you'll do
* Help build and manage software that solves engineering problems at scale.
* Collaborate with other Xeros to create and deliver beautiful software to customers, faster.
* Develop software in our existing suite of products (including new ones), contributing to improved experiences for customers, internal and external.
* Help maintain engineering excellence standards and support your team members in building products together.
* Demonstrate leadership on best practices, acting as a role model and mentor.
* Contribute to a cross-functional environment by working toward shared objectives using modern principles and practices.
* Seek clarity with technical complexities and demonstrate smart ways to automate.
* Make data-driven decisions that release value early to solve customer problems more effectively.
What you'll bring
* Strong advocate and teacher of TDD and automated tooling to safely and repeatedly release code.
* Proficient with CI/CD concepts and tooling.
* Able to make major code design decisions for individual products.
* High coding standards with an emphasis on testing.
* Experience developing software that is secure, performant and scalable.
* Experience with agile methodologies.
* Experience using and keeping up with latest .NET development trends.
* C# and .NET proficiency.
* Experience working with AWS and Kubernetes.
* Previous experience enabling mobile teams from an API perspective is a bonus.
* Previous experience developing iOS or Android software is an additional bonus.
