The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) is recognised as one of the world's top performing arts institutions, offering an extensive range of training across dance, acting, music theatre, production and design, and music. WAAPA's renowned Aboriginal Performance program has been shaping the careers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students for over 20 years. This one-year, full-time VET Certificate IV in 'Aboriginal Performance' attracts aspiring performers from across Australia, offering a culturally vibrant and supportive environment.
Graduates of this program have forged successful careers in theatre, film, and television as actors, writers, and directors, with many securing spots in prestigious Bachelor programs at WAAPA, NIDA, and VCA. The course is open to students of all ages and experience levels, helping them develop their skills and unlock their creative potential.
The Role
In this role, you will bring your skills and experience in teaching acting to guide students through a comprehensive training program that prepares them for theatre and screen work. You'll direct both in-class projects and public productions, providing hands-on, real-world experience. Your expertise in the performing arts industry will ensure that the course reflects best practices, while your ability to work with diverse age groups and experience levels will be key to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
Key Criteria
A completed Certificate IV in Training & Assessment or the ability to complete the Certificate IV in Training & Assessment by January 2025. Other relevant tertiary qualifications are beneficial but not required.
Experience as a teacher or actor-trainer in an industry, educational, youth or community setting.
Demonstrated capacity to develop, coordinate and review teaching curriculum in acting and performance at a tertiary level in relation to VET best practice.
Demonstrated experience in working efficiently and confidently with teaching-related administration such as curriculum documentation, Canvas or similar learning and teaching technology, assessment management, or producing creative projects with young artists.
Evidenced experience as a practitioner in the local or national industry.
Demonstrated capacity to engage with the performing arts sector locally and nationally to enhance the quality of the student experience.
Demonstrated ability to draw on lived experience as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to enrich curriculum and engage meaningfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, ensuring culturally respectful and authentic contributions to teaching and learning.
Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
Benefits & Remuneration
This full time, ongoing position attracts a remuneration of $80,938 to $108,498 pa (ALEVA) or $113,918 to $134,596pa (ALEVB) plus 17% superannuation. Paid Cultural and Ceremonial Leave.
