DescriptionThe Health Physicist III reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.The Health Physicist III, under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer, assists in developing, implementing, coordinating, evaluating, and continuously improving the radiation and laser safety programs. Responsibilities include general surveillance of activities involving radioactive materials, radiation sources, and laser equipment, supporting compliance with regulations, approving research projects and authorized users as specified by the Radiation Safety Officer or Committee, consulting on radiation protection, evaluating personnel monitoring needs, and implementing safety training programs.Responsibilities:Assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining radioactive material management programs across the hospital.Promote departmental goals in protecting employees, staff, physicians, students, guests, and visitors.Provide radiation safety training for occupational radiation workers.Maintain departmental databases.Use meters and instrumentation proficiently.Perform surveys and wipe tests in laboratories using radioactive materials as per the Radioactive Materials License.Conduct radiological or environmental surveys as directed.Manage radiation safety related to radiopharmaceutical therapies.Monitor all interventional and high-dose therapy patients.Ensure bioassays of personnel are completed per license requirements.Collaborate with hospital departments to ensure radiation safety compliance.Maintain meter calibration programs under RSO guidance.Manage radioactive waste, including collection, inventory, and removal.Handle incoming radioactive materials.Perform quarterly sealed source inventory and leak testing semi-annually.Participate in regulatory surveys, inspections, and processes (IEMA, OSHA, DOT, NRC, etc.).Support emergency response efforts and participate in drills, including after-hours incidents.Additional responsibilities:Coordinate quarterly Radiation Safety Committee meetings.Manage radiation safety training for occupational workers, residents, and fellows.Oversee lead apron and waste programs.Lead monitoring and decontamination of radioactive spills.Support the Laser Safety Officer.Calibrate instruments like liquid scintillation counters and uptake probes.Mentor Level I and II health physicists.Assist with IRB dosimetry language.Participate in Radiation Safety education for Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy programs.Assist the Radiation Safety Officer as needed.Working Conditions:The department oversees radiation safety and regulatory functions across Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, involving travel to various hospitals. The primary location is Northwestern Memorial Hospital, with expectations to support off-site locations as needed.QualificationsRequired:Master’s Degree in Radiological Health, Health Physics, Medical Physics, or related field.5 years of experience as Health Physics II or equivalent in a large hospital or academic medical center.Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs and transfer it throughout the hospital.Ability to lift 10 lbs routinely and stand for 3 hours.Proficiency in data collection, process improvement, and quality monitoring.Ability to wear respiratory protection equipment as required.Adherence to safety and work practice policies.Preferred:Experience as a Medical Laser Safety Officer (CMLSO) or in laser safety.Certification as a National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT).Eligibility for American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine Certification or Part I of the CHP exam.Equal Opportunity:Northwestern Medicine is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on age, sex, race, religion, national origin, gender identity, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, or other protected status.Benefits:We offer a comprehensive benefits package to support employees' physical, emotional, and financial well-being.
