Job Description: The Royal Melbourne Hospital - Mental Health Services Psychiatry Registrar - 1st Year This is a 12-month Full Time Fixed Term position commencing 2nd February 2026. Position Description The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria's largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient, rehab, and community-based facilities. Unit Description: The Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services (RMH MHS) provide comprehensive hospital-based, community, and specialist services to youth, adults, and older adults. It operates in partnership with Orygen Specialist Program and other health services in the west and north of metropolitan Melbourne. RMH MHS Psychiatry Training Program offers a highly successful and varied training experience with a great choice of rotations across all training levels. We pride ourselves on being able to offer breadth in well-supported clinical roles and opportunities to pursue research, further study, or other interests. Our training program is enhanced with access to our experienced coordinators of First Year training, psychotherapy, scholarly projects, exam preparation, and service training. We offer a broad range of teaching and education opportunities including psychiatric interview tutorials, psychotherapy tutorials, an observed interview program, Grand Rounds, and regular peer and consultant-led teaching. About the role: Accredited psychiatry training position appropriate to first year of training in general adult inpatient/outpatient settings, which, once successfully completed, opens pathways to roles across all levels of psychiatry training within inpatient units, community mental health teams, residential rehabilitation units (PARCs & CCUs), homeless outreach services, emergency mental health services, consultation-liaison psychiatry, autism assessment, First Nations wellbeing services, and more. Further training opportunities through partnerships with Orygen, The Royal Children's Hospital, Statewide Neuropsychiatry, Eating Disorder services, Forensicare, and the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry. About You: General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) at the start of training in February 2026. At least 2 years of general medical/HMO experience (pre-vocational) by February 2026. At least one term (10 weeks) of Psychiatry experience as an HMO/unaccredited registrar at application time. A passion for caring and making a genuine difference in the lives of public mental health consumers, families, and carers across inpatient and community settings. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with consumers, families, carers, and professionals. Interested?
