Position Summary

The Cyber Security Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting secure ICT and cyber security solutions for Calexi clients, primarily within government and regulated environments.

The role requires a strong foundational background in ICT systems and networking, combined with hands-on experience in cyber security operations, governance, risk and compliance (GRC), or cyber security engineering. The Cyber Security Specialist applies risk-based security controls across networks, systems, and applications, supports monitoring and incident response activities, and contributes to compliance and assurance outcomes aligned with government standards.

Working as a consultant embedded within client teams, the role balances technical depth with practical advisory skills, contributing to Calexi's culture of leadership, continuous improvement, and delivery excellence.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

1. Technical Delivery (ICT & Cyber Security)

2. Design, implement, maintain, and enforce cyber security controls across network, system, and application layers.

3. Apply security engineering principles to ICT infrastructure including routing, switching, firewalls, identity systems, and endpoint platforms.
4. Implement and manage security technologies such as firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, endpoint protection, encryption, and logging platforms.
5. Conduct vulnerability assessments, security testing, and technical risk analysis across ICT environments.
6. Monitor security systems, logs, and alerts to detect and investigate potential threats or anomalous behaviour.

7. Cyber Operations & Incident Response

8. Identify, triage, and respond to cyber security incidents in line with defined procedures.

9. Spport incident containment, eradication, and recovery activities.
10. Perform root-cause analysis and recommend corrective and preventative controls.
11. Analyse threat intelligence, attack techniques, and emerging risks to improve defensive posture.

12. Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC)

13. Support cyber security governance activities aligned to frameworks such as ISM, PSPF, Essential Eight, and ISO 27001.

14. Contribute to risk assessments, security documentation, and assurance artefacts (e.g. SSPs, risk registers, control mappings).
15. Assist with internal and external audits, accreditation activities, and compliance reviews.
16. Ensure security documentation is accurate, current, and defensible.

17. Client Engagement & Advisory

18. Work closely with client stakeholders to understand ICT and security requirements.

19. Translate technical cyber risks into clear, actionable advice for non-technical audiences.
20. Provide pragmatic, risk-based recommendations that support operational and mission outcomes.

21. Awareness, Culture & Continuous Improvement

22. Contribute to cyber security awareness and training activities.

23. Promote secure-by-design and defence-in-depth principles.
24. Stay current with emerging technologies, threats, and best practices.
25. Share knowledge and mentor colleagues where appropriate.

Skills and Abilities

* ICT & Networking Foundation
* Strong foundational knowledge of enterprise ICT environments, including:
* Networking concepts (routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, segmentation)
* Operating systems (Windows and Linux)
* Identity and access management
* Core infrastructure and cloud concepts
* Ability to understand and troubleshoot issues across ICT and security domains.
* Cyber Security Capability

Experience in one or more of the following:

* Cyber security engineering
* Security operations / SIEM analysis
* Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC)
* Understanding of common attack techniques, threat models, and defensive controls.
* Experience working with security monitoring, logging, and alerting platforms.

Analytical & Communication Skills

* Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
* Ability to assess risk and design proportionate security controls.
* Clear written and verbal communication tailored to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Professional & Consulting Skills
* Comfortable working independently in client environments.
* Proactive, accountable, and outcomes-focused.
* Collaborative mindset with the ability to build trust and credibility.

Qualifications and Experience

* Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Networking, or a related discipline, and/or equivalent professional experience.
* Demonstrated experience in ICT, networking, or systems roles, providing a strong technical foundation.
* Professional experience in cyber security engineering, cyber operations/SIEM, and/or cyber GRC roles.
* Experience working in government or regulated environments is highly regarded.
* Exposure to encryption technologies, incident response, and secure system design.
* Relevant certifications (e.g. networking, security, or GRC-focused) are desirable but not mandatory.
