Legal Counsel Job Description
This role is designed to provide strategic legal advice and governance guidance related to the activities of a leading not-for-profit agency supporting people from all walks of life.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide timely, insightful advice to senior leadership on diverse areas including employment law, contract law, WHS, privacy, and more.
* Interpret complex legislation and apply deep knowledge of employment law, dispute resolution, and regulatory requirements to guide decisions and ensure compliance.
* Represent the organisation before external regulatory bodies and serve as Company Secretary and governance advisor.
* Manage litigation and risk, overseeing all legal risk and liability matters – drafting and responding to letters of demand, managing small claims and ADR, and orchestrating external counsel and insurance claims as needed.
* Collaborate with internal stakeholders and liaise effectively with external professionals on professional standards matters.
Requirements and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
* Current Australian Legal Practising Certificate with 7+ years of relevant professional experience post-admission; in-house experience desirable.
* Experience in Employment and Industrial Law, Dispute Resolution and/or Litigation, and/or Aged Care Law and Company Secretarial Duties.
* Sound knowledge of regulatory bodies and ability to apply a legal framework to emerging changes.
* Proven expertise in advising stakeholders on legal risks and assessing complex risk as part of providing solutions-driven advice.
* Excellent stakeholder liaison and consultation skills, strong communication skills with the ability to influence and negotiate at all levels.
