Downlands College is seeking applications from qualified individuals as the Leader of the Cattle Show Team, commencing at the start of 2026 or earlier, as negotiated. This role would be suitable for a teacher registered with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) or a School Officer who has had extensive experience selecting, preparing and showing stud cattle and led steers/heifers.

Owned and operated by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Downlands has a long history of success in the showing of stud cattle, showing of led steers/heifers, developing junior paraders and junior cattle judges. Nurtured by a deeply committed team of teachers and support staff, our tradition fosters an educational philosophy that is heart-centred and values-driven.

The Cattle Show Team leader is an integral role in the Downlands College Agricultural Program. Duties performed require considerable attention to detail, sound knowledge of animal husbandry, stud stock management and showmanship. The role requires a high level of independence, initiative and the ability to be proactive. Of high priority in this role is comprehensive feedback to the Deputy Principal.

Requirements

Liaise with local cattle studs to develop a relationship that allows Downlands College to operate as a fitting service.

Coach the Cattle Show Team – preparation of stock for showing, parading and junior judging (these training sessions will be before and after school).

Manage the annual team event schedule and attend shows.

Complete entries and administrative requirements regarding Cattle Show Team and school excursions.

Oversee the feeding schedule and animal health requirements for stock that are part of the show team, in liaison with the Farm Assistant.

Assist in livestock selection purchases.

Provide clear and concise communication with parents of students of Cattle Show Team.

Promote the Cattle Show Team by providing show reports/results to the College.

Current Blue Card (Working with Children) or the capacity to obtain.

If the successful applicant is a teacher, a teaching load will be negotiated. If the successful applicant is a School Officer, duties associated with supporting the delivery of agriculture programs will be negotiated.
