We are seeking applications to fill a full-time ongoing Communications Adviser position in the office of Senator Steph Hodgins-May
About the role
In this role, you will deliver digital media and media tactics to promote the Senator's work, raise her public profile, amplify the Greens' vision, and support key campaigns and initiatives. Your work will help shape public debate, grow our movement, and strengthen connections with communities across Victoria and nationally.
As Communications Adviser, you'll shape and maintain clear, consistent key messages across digital platforms and audiences. You'll use your outstanding writing skills to develop proactive and reactive story ideas, write speeches, op-eds, media releases, social copy and talking points, and produce persuasive digital content that communicates complex ideas simply and powerfully. You'll also support the day-to-day media engagement, coordinate appearances and interviews, and lead daily media monitoring to inform tactics and guide timely responses.
You will be part of a small, collaborative, and high-performing team. You will work closely with the Campaigns Lead to implement overarching campaign messaging, write supporter emails and copy for key moments. You'll work closely with the Senior Adviser to leverage parliamentary and policy opportunities and support the delivery of media opportunities.
This role is responsible for ensuring digital content aligns with broader messaging and communications goals. strategy. The role requires political judgment, initiative, and the ability to work quickly and strategically in high-pressure environments.
In this role, the Communications Adviser will:
* Implement the Senator's communications and media strategy.
* Develop and deliver engaging digital content that brings the Senator's parliamentary and campaign work to life, working collaboratively with the Campaigns Lead and Senior Adviser.
* Manage the Senator's website content and communication materials, both online and print.
* Support the Senior Adviser as needed, including contributing to speechwriting and parliamentary materials
* Support the Senior Adviser to develop and arrange and deliver press conferences and media engagements, including writing and distributing media releases, statements, and opinion pieces, especially during sitting weeks
* Conduct daily media monitoring and brief the Senator on key developments
* Ensure messaging aligns with office priorities and the Greens' broader strategy
* Produce reports and analytics to inform communications efforts
* Assist with crisis communications and timely communications and media responses
* Promote, support and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
* Perform other duties as required by the Senator and/or Chief of Staff.
Skills and experience required:
* Strong and versatile writing skills across digital platforms, email/web marketing and campaign communications.
* Demonstrated ability to create and design engaging and effective digital content across multiple formats and channels.
* Experience managing multiple digital channels to boost profile and engagement with diverse audiences.
* Strong analytical skills, with demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically, and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
* Experience in a communications role and/or media relations, preferably within political or advocacy settings.
* Demonstrated understanding of the Australian media and political landscapes.
* Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a small team under rapidly changing circumstances, time constraints and strict deadlines.
* Strong organisational skills, including time management and meticulous attention to detail.
* Demonstrated understanding of the political process and the Australian parliamentary system.
* Experience in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and Capcut.
* Experience executing successful digital campaigns.
Employment conditions:
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act (1984) and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27which include:
* A commencing salary between $74,537and $78,911 per annum will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
* An additional allowance of $11,610 per annum may be payable in recognition of, and as compensation for, additional hours of work and travel requirements.
* Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
* An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% is payable.
Applicants should note:
* While a Canberra location is preferred, if you are Melbourne based, you'll be required to travel to Canberra and at times across Victoria, and interstate to support the Senator during sitting weeks and key events.
* An initial probationary period of three months may apply and may be subject to extension.
* The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
* Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
* The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
