What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will assist consumers of the Mental Health services to navigate the systems, services and processes that are established between Mental Health and non-government, primary care, social support, justice and drug and alcohol services to ensure collaboration, connectivity, and ensure appropriate support at transitional points in care for Aboriginal people
The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will provide support and knowledge of preventative, health and social care wrap around services that provide a response for Aboriginal consumers and navigate appropriate referral pathways. The role will work closely with the Aboriginal Mental Health Workforce and the acute mental health services to ensure to that Aboriginal people accessing mental health services feel culturally safe and empowered in making decisions in regard to their health.
The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will also support clinical teams in the provision of culturally informed assessment and treatment approaches, discharging planning and ensure the social, cultural and historical contexts are at the forefront of services offered through mental health services. With the Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator ensuring services build on the strengths, resources and knowledge of Aboriginal consumers.
The Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator will be responsible for supporting the acute mental health services to increase their capacity to work with Aboriginal people, families and communities in a culturally safe manner.

Selection Criteria
1. Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW) and have established links with their local Aboriginal community.
2. Tertiary qualification Bachelor Health Science (Mental Health), or qualifications and current registration with AHPRA for Registered Nurses )with minimum of 5 years fulltime equivalent post registration experience), Occupational Therapists, Welfare Officer or eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers for Social Workers.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with experience in mental health and/or social emotional spiritual wellbeing of Aboriginal people and their communities.
4. Demonstrated ability to provide high quality, safe and connected care to consumers and their families and carers in a person-centred and holistic manner that promotes self-determination and in context of the principles of mental health rehabilitation, recovery framework and a strength based approach.
5. Demonstrated skills in negotiation, communication and facilitation skills.
6. Demonstrated skills in consumer advocacy, cultural support, and providing evidence based education and information to consumers and/or their family and carers.
7. Evidence of a current unrestricted drivers’ licence and the ability to maintain. Ability and willingness to drive/travel as the role requires. This may involve driving long distances and overnight stays.
