Senior Legal Officer Role

The Construction & General Division is Australia's main trade union in the building and construction industries. Our ACT Divisional Branch boasts membership across the private sector, ACT government sector and the Federal Government sector.

We are dedicated to protecting the lives and improving the conditions and wages of construction workers with our legal/industrial department playing a key role in enforcing the rights of union members.


About This Opportunity

* This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Legal Officer to join our team of dedicated union officers and employees committed to the values and principles of unionism, and advancing the cause of our organisation and its members.


Key Responsibilities

1. Preparing and managing all aspects of case preparation, management and advocacy for appearances or instructing in courts or the Fair Work Commission.
2. Providing legal advice and assistance to members, organisers and executive in the ACT regarding industrial and employment law matters.
3. Dealing with regulatory authorities and interacting with legal/industrial officers from other branches and unions.
4. Researching and writing submissions on issues that affect our members.
5. Drafting enterprise agreements/clauses and participating in the bargaining and agreement making processes.
6. General legal practitioner duties.

This is an excellent opportunity for a litigant to work closely with some of the preeminent Industrial barristers and participate in various litigation matters.


Requirements

* Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor with an unrestricted current ACT practicing certificate (or interstate certificate with capacity to obtain ACT practicing certificate).
* Experience as a Senior Legal Officer or 5+ years legal/industrial experience.
* Litigation experience either as an instructor or advocate is required.
* Experience and knowledge of right of entry is preferred.
* Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Adobe and related programs.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Commitment to union values, including social justice, equity, and collective action.
