We are seeking an experienced Work Health & Safety (WHS) professional to join a federal government organisation as an Assistant Director – Work Health and Safety. This is a leadership role where you'll provide expert WHS advice, lead critical risk management activities, and support the implementation of our WHS strategy across diverse operational environments.
The role
You'll be the WHS operations lead —guiding managers on obligations, shaping risk frameworks, and lifting safety capability across varied sites (from office to field settings). You'll operate with autonomy, reporting to the Director of WHS Operations, and be trusted to set direction, solve complex issues, and deliver clear, evidence‑based recommendations.
Key responsibilities
* Coach leaders and teams on WHS legislation, standards, and due diligence.
* Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and corrective actions.
* Build proactive hazard reporting and risk registers; ensure controls are effective and documented.
* Develop and refine WHS programs, policies, and management systems for regulatory compliance.
* Produce high‑quality reports, briefs, and advice for senior stakeholders.
About you
* Deep knowledge of WHS legislation and Australian Standards within a government context.
* Strong risk management capability—frameworks, control effectiveness, and continuous improvement.
* Proven experience leading teams and influencing senior stakeholders.
* Resilient, pragmatic, and comfortable managing competing priorities in fast‑paced contexts.
Qualifications
* Mandatory: Relevant tertiary qualification in WHS/risk/health.
* Desirable: Incident investigation and risk management credentials.
Other details
* National scope; occasional interstate travel.
* Flexible work arrangements considered.
* Ability to obtain/hold Baseline security clearance; pre‑employment checks apply.
