Position Summary
The Risk Coordinator is responsible for supporting the organisation’s risk management, child safety, and incident reporting processes. The role ensures that strategic and operational risk registers are well-maintained, the Risk Management Framework remains fit for purpose, and that a strong risk-aware and child-safe culture is embedded across MDAS.
Working closely with the Client Incident Management System (CIMS) team, the Risk Coordinator supports case reviews, investigations, and staff queries relating to incident reporting. The role is also a key resource for high-risk organisational projects and contributes to improved risk culture through training, capacity building, and education.
A core focus of the role is positioning risk management as a practical decision-making tool, enabling managers and staff to use risk insights to prioritise resources, make informed choices, and balance opportunity and risk in achieving organisational outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management
Maintain strategic and operational risk registers, ensuring information is current and regularly reviewed.Ensure the Risk Management Framework and supporting documents remain relevant and effective.Conduct regular risk assessments and contribute to audit and compliance reviews.Support managers to identify, assess, and manage risks within their programs.Embed risk analysis as a tool for decision-making and resource prioritisation.
Risk Culture
Lead implementation of risk culture improvement initiatives across the and deliver staff training on risk awareness and accountability.Provide coaching and advice to managers and staff to embed risk practices into daily positive messaging that positions risk as an enabler of safe, high-quality service delivery.Evaluate and report on the effectiveness of risk culture initiatives.
Child Safety & Incident Risk Management
Support implementation and monitoring of Child Safe Standards across MDAS, integrating child safety considerations into risk management processes.Assist the CIMS team with case reviews, investigations, and staff queries regarding incident reporting.Provide staff with guidance and training on child safety responsibilities and incident reporting.
Coordination
Provide day-to-day coordination and guidance to the Incident Report Coordinator, Records Officer, and Quality & Governance Officer.Contribute to project-based risk assessments, controls, and mitigation governance and decision-making through risk analysis and reporting.
Stakeholder Engagement
Build strong working relationships across teams to support a proactive risk and child safety culture.Liaise with external agencies and regulators on risk and incident management where required.Facilitate cross-departmental discussions regarding shared risks and systemic issues.Guide stakeholders in using risk insights to prioritise actions and allocate resources effectively.
Corporate Responsibilities
Support values that respect historical and contemporary Aboriginal cultures, recognising Aboriginal people’s special connection with the with Quality, Risk, and Occupational Health and Safety laws, standards, policies, and safe work practices.Actively monitor and improve the quality and safety of care and services.Assist with internal and external audit processes.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Risk Management Expertise
Tertiary qualification or demonstrated experience in risk management, compliance, or governance within a complex ability to apply risk as a decision-making and prioritisation tool.
Child Safety Knowledge
Understanding of Child Safe Standards, incident reporting requirements, and relevant legislative frameworks.
Analytical Skills
Ability to assess risks, analyse trends, and recommend practical mitigation strategies.
Communication Skills & Collaboration
High-level verbal and written communication skills.Experience in training, coaching, and building capacity of staff and managers.Demonstrated ability to work flexibly across projects, build effective relationships, and engage with diverse stakeholders.
