A LITTLE ABOUT US

When it comes to food experience, me&u helps you always feel like a local. The company's vision is to bring that feeling to everyone, anywhere - so no matter what neighbourhood you live in or visit, you'll always know the perfect place to go and exactly what to order.

Job Description

me&u is used by 6000+ bars, pubs, and restaurants to create memorable guest experiences and grow their brands. With 200 staff in five countries, and headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, me&u is the consolidation of two leading hospitality technology companies: Mr Yum and me&u, who merged in November 2023.

About The Role

Engineering Managers at me&u serve a dual role of people and technology leaders. Driving solution design, technical direction and delivery for their team, while aligning to our engineering principles and technical vision.

As part of me&u's vision we're launching Spots (spots.meandu.com) a new consumer facing app and web platform which aims to be the one place for saving, discovering and sharing recommendations with friends. In this role you'll lead a group of engineers in a cross‑functional team and together, you'll work end to end towards building Spots, leveraging ML/AI and our incredibly deep dataset to personalise our users' journey in ways that feel delightful & helpful, but never intrusive: great Spots and menus recommendations, smarter discovery and timely suggestions. You can read the launch article on Spots here.

Reporting to one of the company's co‑founders directly, you'll be collaborating closely with the Spots Product Manager and the Product Designer for the stream, creating a balance between the desirability, viability and feasibility of the product you co‑create, ensuring a great experience for our customers worthy of our brand.

Engineering Managers at me&u are technical, and are expected to be on the tools, delivering production code. Their primary role however, is to act as multipliers – enabling their team to do their best work.

For this role we are open to very strong ICs who have technical leadership experience in successfully delivering commercial projects, have informal people leadership experience such as mentoring and are ready to step into a people management role while remaining hands‑on.

What You'll Do

* Lead and nurture a team of engineers through influence instead of authority; be recognised for your technical leadership, but be flexible to champion the solutions of others
* Collaborate with our ML/AI Practice Lead (who is also is an IC on our Guest Intelligence Engine stream)
* Provide strong people management to your group of engineers; own career development, 1:1s and responsibility for team performance and culture
* Proactively monitor and communicate team health and performance to Product & Engineering Leadership.
* Be a key driver of creating and owning the solution design and architecture for a new product from conception to production including managing the on‑call for the systems which form it.
* Build anti‑fragile systems with well tested, maintainable code and champion engineering and quality practices within your team and beyond
* Own and be accountable for team delivery, by planning and executing cross‑functional technical projects and provide leadership in a collaborative and user‑focused environment
* Ensure software delivered by the team is delivered to our engineering quality standards, optimising to solving the customer problem yet with appropriate attention paid to non‑functional requirements such as security, testing, monitoring etc.
* You will be a key part of the technology leadership (our technology vision guild), and expected to continuously review and improve our technical solutions and engineering practices
* Balance rapid iteration speed with the overall stability, security and maintainability of our system
* In collaboration with our Talent team, attract and recruit engineers to grow and achieve a diverse, technically excellent team operating at various seniority levels
* Work closely with cross‑functional team members from product, design and other business units such as marketing and partnership to achieve your stream's outcome

What You'll Need

* Commercial experience in DataOps and/or MLOps is a must have
* Experience leading the technical delivery with engineers in a collaborative, cross‑functional product team collaborating closely with Product Management, Product Design and external peers (Tech Leadership).
* Strong coaching skills; the ability to guide engineers at all levels in delivery, solution design and engineering practices
* Ability to champion flexibility and agility in team delivery; understand how to deliver the right level of polish vs MVP and negotiate the trade‑offs effectively. Be nimble on where in that spectrum you operate, as different stages require different trade‑offs.
* Experience continuously improving software engineering and agile best practices
* Excellent communication skills; the ability to work with cross functional and non‑technical stakeholders from across the business and timezones
* Software Engineering skills using modern programming languages such as Typescript, Python, Javascript, Go, Ruby etc.
* Experience working with scalable architecture using modularised, distributed applications. Event Driven Architecture, Domain Driven Design and distributed systems experience is a must
* Love for standing on the shoulders of giants: using accepted industry patterns over re‑inventing the wheel. Passion for looking for existing tools/libraries/patterns first (and perhaps improving them). If we absolutely need to create our own, driven to do it in a way that we can leverage widely.

NICE TO HAVE

* Direct line‑management / people leadership experience
* Experience in consumer facing personalisation would be an advantage
* Experience in personalising digital ordering would differentiate you from other candidates
* Understanding of the hospitality industry and what makes a guest experience in hospitality unique and personalised
* Strengths in one or more of the following would be advantageous: Modern front‑end architecture, consumer‑facing hybrid app development
