Primary objective

Assist in providing expert advice and the development, implementation, delivery, and assessment of accredited training packages to Community Corrections staff including Probation and Parole Officers, to ensure that the training is part of a planned program designed to meet current and future needs.

Context statement

The position holder is responsible for training and capacity building Compliance Officers, Probation and Parole Officers and Team Leaders in key aspects of their statutory roles, including case management of offenders and preparation of court assessments and parole reports.

Key duties and responsibilities

* Assist to develop and implement a training strategy that addresses both current and future training and development needs of Community Corrections staff.
* Identify skills gaps and develop a planned approach to targeted capacity building to support career progression within this specialised statutory work environment.
* Design, delivery and review of core and non-core accredited and non-accredited training programs specific to Community Corrections, including offender management, risk assessment and report writing to staff in groups or 1-on-1; and assess units of competency towards the Certificate IV in Correctional Practice.
* Identify on-going training needs and co-ordinate external training providers as required.
* Develop partnerships with key stakeholders and ensure that the training, development and delivery meets appropriate standards and qualifications.
* Provide training, mentoring and support to Community Probation and Parole Officers, in urban and remote locations. Undertake regular travel to regional offices to deliver training and assess workplace evidence.

Selection criteria

* Essential
* Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent qualification.
* Must have ability to train in case management of complex cases, including experience of writing, vetting and assessing reports for a variety of audiences including sentencing authorities.
* Demonstrated experience in the development, preparation, delivery and assessment of accredited training programs to ensure staff, such as Probation and Parole Officers, are competent in their roles.
* Demonstrated high level interpersonal and oral and written communication skills through training and coaching staff in classroom, office, and community settings.
* Proven ability to develop positive relationships and communicate and interact effectively with a range of stakeholders including people from diverse cultures including members of traditional Aboriginal communities, and various government and non-government agencies.
* Demonstrated knowledge of legislation, policies and procedures governing Community Corrections.

Desirable

* Previous experience and/or knowledge of the operations and procedures of Department of Corrections, specifically Community Corrections.

Further information

Successful applicant must hold a manual Northern Territory Driver's Licence and may be required to travel within regional and remote communities and camp out when required. Travel may be by means of road and air, including on outback roads in four-wheel drives, light aircraft and boats. A willingness to work flexible hours will also be required. The Department of Corrections has a Smoke Free Policy. Staff are not permitted to smoke anywhere on departmental premises, facilities or in vehicles, nor whilst working off-site. The preferred applicant/s will be required to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and the successful applicant/s will be required to undergo a criminal history check (confirmed by fingerprints and name check) prior to commencement of employment. An adverse criminal history will not necessarily exclude an applicant from this position. All Department of Corrections employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
