Job Expectations We have an exciting opportunity at nbn, as Senior Engineer Critical Infrastructure reporting to Senior Manager CNI Engineering. A bit about your role As a Senior Engineer – Critical Infrastructure, you will be a senior technical specialist providing expert engineering input and design assurance for critical physical infrastructure supporting nbn’s Network and Technology Sites (NTS). You will play a key role within nbn’s Engineering Design Authority, applying deep subject matter expertise across power, cooling, fire protection and connectivity to ensure infrastructure solutions are safe, resilient, scalable and cost ‑ effective. Operating within established architecture and governance frameworks, you will help shape engineering standards, reference designs and infrastructure decisions for large ‑ scale, business ‑ critical programs. Working closely with a wide range of internal stakeholders, you will translate technical, operational and capacity requirements into compliant engineering solutions. You will also collaborate with Facilities, Network Capacity, Resilience and Asset Management teams, Delivery groups, and external vendors and consultants to review, assess and refine designs. While this role does not have direct reports, it carries significant influence across the organisation. You will provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to other engineers, support capability uplift within the team, and contribute to continuous improvement in engineering maturity. The role will provide senior ‑ level technical expertise across critical infrastructure domains such as HVAC, AC and DC power systems, fire detection and suppression, equipment racks, earthing and structured cabling. Contribute to the development and maintenance of nbn engineering standards, reference designs and facility planning documentation, and act as a senior member of the Design Authority by reviewing high ‑ level and detailed designs for compliance with Australian Standards, nbn requirements and engineering best practice. Assess design variations and exemption requests, offering clear technical recommendations and risk assessments, and specify, test and validate infrastructure components before deployment. Ensure all designs consider resilience, availability, security, sustainability, energy efficiency and whole ‑ of ‑ life impacts. Support governance forums with technical papers and recommendations, evaluate the performance of deployed infrastructure to identify improvements, and work effectively with vendors and engineering consultants on technical evaluations and solution selection. A bit about you You are an experienced senior engineer with deep expertise in data centre and telecommunications facility infrastructure and design, and a strong grounding in relevant Australian and international standards. You are comfortable operating in complex environments where your technical judgement, attention to detail and ability to influence outcomes are critical. You bring strong documentation and analytical skills and can clearly communicate complex engineering concepts to a wide range of stakeholders. You enjoy mentoring others and contributing to the development of robust, repeatable engineering solutions. The ideal candidate has strong expertise in designing and delivering complex, large ‑ scale data centre or telecommunications infrastructure solutions, with deep knowledge of critical systems such as cooling, fire protection, AC and – 48V DC power supply and distribution. They have demonstrated capability in creating, reviewing and assuring facility designs, engineering drawings, specifications and standards, and bring strong stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills.
