The Principal Airworthiness Engineer - Aircraft Certification plays a pivotal role within CASA's Airworthiness and Engineering Branch, contributing specialist expertise to the assessment, approval and oversight of Australia's aircraft design and modification activities. Working as part of the Airworthiness and Engineering Design and Manufacturing team and broader Aviation Technical Workforce (ATW), the role undertakes complex to highly complex regulatory tasks with limited direction, collaborating closely with aviation and engineering professionals to deliver CASA's strategic operational priorities. The position engages extensively with industry stakeholders, supports the development of airworthiness policy, legislation and guidance, and contributes to certification activities, oversight of design and production approval holders, management of safety issues, and Australia's airworthiness obligations under the Chicago Convention.

Key Responsibilities include:
* Exercise sound engineering judgement and make decisions on complex to highly complex aircraft certification applications, ensuring compliance with legislation, standards, policy and CASA's Regulatory Philosophy.
* Lead and contribute to aircraft certification work programs, including the assessment and approval of aircraft designs, modifications and aeronautical products, while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
* Provide expert technical advice, guidance and education to regulated entities, government agencies, industry stakeholders and the public on aircraft certification matters.
* Conduct engineering assessments, evaluate design and organisational approval applications, and prepare high quality reports with clear recommendations, including identification of risks or systemic issues.
* Lead and participate in regulatory oversight activities, including audits of authorised persons, delegates and approved design organisations.
* Assess and analyse industry information and external influences to develop compliance strategies and mitigate emerging or actual risks.
* Coach and mentor colleagues, contribute to capability development across the team, and foster collaboration in multidisciplinary technical environments.
* Represent CASA in national and international forums with other aviation authorities and contribute to a positive safety culture, organisational change initiatives and other duties as required.
Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

* Extensive experience in aircraft and aeronautical product certification, supported by strong technical expertise across relevant engineering disciplines and system safety practices.
* Comprehensive understanding of Australian civil aviation safety legislation - or an equivalent regulatory framework - relating to aircraft certification and design approval.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively in, and lead, multidisciplinary teams, while building strong relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
* Experience conducting surveillance or oversight of design engineering activities and applying robust aviation risk management principles.
* Ability to represent CASA and the Australian Government in international forums, ideally supported by prior experience within a National Aviation Authority.
Eligibility Requirements

Employment with CASA is subject to conditions prescribed within the Civil Aviation Act 1988 (the Act) and the CASA Enterprise Agreement. The following eligibility requirements apply to this position:

* At a minimum, prospective CASA employees must undergo pre-employment screening and must be willing to provide the required information to successfully undergo a police record check.
* The position's occupant must be an Australian citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain the required level of security clearance as required.
* As an employee in a safety sensitive position, perform, or be available to perform, safety sensitive aviation activities, as defined in the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998.
* Undertake and pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test as part of CASA's Alcohol and Other Drugs Directive and Procedure.
Mandatory Qualifications
* University level engineering qualification that is applicable to the identified area of specialisation and be eligible for membership of Engineers Australia in the Professional Engineer occupational category.
* OR
* University level engineering qualification that is applicable to the identified area of specialisation and be eligible for membership of Engineers Australia in the Professional Engineer occupational category, and hold aircraft flight test engineering qualification, preferably long course qualified from a flight test engineering school such as ETPS, NTPS, USNTPS. Note: The Delegate may consider industry experience equivalent to a flight test engineering school qualification as acceptable in lieu of a formal qualification. (Flight Test Engineer specialisation only).
