Primary objective
The provision of high quality general orthopaedic services, and provide leadership to the unit, through the Department of Surgery
- Orthopaedics, to Alice Springs Hospital, Alice Springs and Barkly regions and fringe areas of Western Australia and South
Australia.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide and supervise the inpatient care in the Department of Surgery – Orthopaedics on a day-to-day basis, and undertake,
supervise and organise efficient running of outpatient clients. Participate in the on-call roster as required to ensure the proper
functioning of the hospital.
2. Supervise the day-to-day activities of residents and registrars in Orthopaedics and ensure the overall quality of clinical care and
the medical records.
3. Proven track record of research-related activities and a strong history of publications.
4. Participate in teaching for registrars and residents and education programs for medical students and supporting staff and
participate in other duties as delegated by the director of Orthopaedics and the Executive Director of Medical and Clinical
Services. Undertake research as appropriate.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for specialist medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Appropriate specialist qualifications or equivalent of full-time service in medical practice as a Specialist Medical Officer or
eligible for Fellowship with Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS)
3. Demonstrated experience as a generalist orthopaedic surgeon who is well capable of managing complex upper and lower limb
trauma, arthroplasty, sports-related injuries, and their postoperative implications.
4. Interest in Indigenous health, and an ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
5. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively and effectively in a cross-
cultural work environment, as a team member and with people of diverse cultures
6. Ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team and an interest in and a commitment to improving Aboriginal
health.
7. Ability to assume administrative and supervisory responsibilities
8. Demonstrated initiative and ability motivate others and to directly manage performance of junior staff and a commitment to
continuing education, and research.
