We're looking for a backend-focused engineer who can help build scalable APIs, improve system performance and reliability, and contribute to shared services and internal tools. You'll work with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to deliver end-to-end experiences with real user impact.
What You'd Be Doing In This Role
Backend roles at Canva can vary by team, but commonly involve designing and implementing scalable services, improving performance and reliability, and contributing to shared tooling. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to scope, define, and deliver impactful product features. You'll help evolve Canva's backend architecture through thoughtful service design and system decomposition, while maintaining high standards for reliability and observability.
Day-to-day focus (typical for a Backend Engineer at this level):
Leading the design and development of scalable, reliable backend services using modern frameworks and tools
Driving collaboration with PMs, designers, and engineers to scope, define, and deliver features
Evolving and scaling Canva's backend architecture through service design and tooling
Championing reliability, performance, and engineering best practices
Writing robust, well-tested code and identifying opportunities for improvement
Guiding design and code reviews, mentoring peers, and raising the technical bar
Maintaining and improving service health, observability, and incident resilience in partnership with your team
You're Probably A Match If
You have extensive experience building complex backend systems in production
You have strong Java fundamentals and can write production-grade code with expertise in multithreading, service design, and performance optimization
You're comfortable owning features end-to-end—from architecture to delivery
You balance detail with pragmatism and ship reliable, maintainable code quickly
You're a thoughtful collaborator across disciplines and bring others along
You understand how systems connect to product goals, reliability, and long-term scalability
You enjoy mentoring others and lifting the technical bar
You have hands-on experience using AI in coding to drive impact
