Applications are sought for part-time standing members of the department's Scientific Advisory Group. The department is seeking to fill the roles of chair, economist and risk analysis specialist for terms of up to four years.
About the role
The Scientific Advisory Group (the Group) is a part-time panel of independent experts tasked with examining and providing comments on biosecurity import risk analyses (BIRAs) being conducted by the Director of Biosecurity.
What the Scientific Advisory Group does
The Group may be asked at any stage in a BIRA to review and provide comments on any aspect of the BIRA. The Group may be asked to consider whether:
* technical submissions received from stakeholders in response to the draft BIRA report have been properly considered
* all relevant matters relating to the likely economic consequences of a disease or pest incursion have been properly considered
* the conclusions of the draft and provisional BIRA report are logical and scientifically reasonable, based on the material presented
* any other scientific issues that have arisen during the BIRA process have been adequately considered.
The Group provides findings and makes recommendations for the department's consideration to overcome any identified deficiencies in relation to the draft or provisional BIRA report or any other aspect of the BIRA. All final decisions rest with the department.
As independent experts, members of the Group may be engaged separately to review standard import risk analyses.
