Primary objective
Perform phlebotomy on patients as requested at the Alice Springs Hospital and assist scientific staff in the Pathology
Department with specimen preparation, processing and quality control procedures.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Collect venous blood samples from any patients at the Alice Springs Hospital.
2. Assist the technical staff in specimen reception, data entry, preparation, and processing.
3. Assist the quality team to maintain standards to NATA guidelines.
4. Monitor the hospital analysers performing daily quality control and a routine maintenance program.
5. Monitor stock levels of all relevant consumables by performing regular checks through stock-takes.
6. Participate in weekend and evening rosters.
7. Perform various laboratory duties as required such as set-up of specimens in Microbiology.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant qualification in phlebotomy or proven experience in phlebotomy and familiarity with medical and pathology
terminology.
2. Proven understanding of quality control in a pathology laboratory.
3. Effective oral communication to liaise with patients, clinicians, and other health professionals.
4. Willingness to learn new techniques and increase knowledge.
5. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable
1. A knowledge of safe working practices such as infection control and barrier nursing.
2. Must be self-motivated, productive, reliable and co-operative.
3. Must be able to work well within a team and manage conflict situations.
4. Experience with Microbiological specimen set-up and loading automated pathology analysers.
