About us The Department of Education (the department) is responsible for delivering and regulating state-wide learning and development services to approximately one-third of all Victorians across the early childhood and school education sectors. The department is also one of Victoria's biggest employers, with approximately 80,000 teaching staff and around 5,000 public service employees. The Legal Division provides highly valued legal services to support the delivery of the department's strategic objectives, key reforms, and to manage legal risk. It offers direct, practical, and strategic legal advice to portfolio ministers, the secretary, senior staff, and over 1,600 government schools, supporting approximately 650,000 Victorian Government school students. About the role – Fixed Term, Full-Time until 30 June 2027 A rare opportunity has arisen to join the Legal Division's executive leadership team as Project Director of the newly formed Regulatory Reform Unit (RRU). The RRU leads legal aspects of significant legislative projects, including initiatives to improve child safety in early childhood services in Victoria. The Project Director will lead a small team of lawyers to deliver these legislative projects, providing expert legal advice focusing on government law issues, especially Victorian laws related to government administration and the education system. The role requires leadership, people management skills, and technical legal and project management expertise. The successful candidate will respond to urgent issues, engage proactively with department areas, and develop strategies for successful legislative project delivery. This role involves building and maintaining strategic relationships with senior executives, ministers' offices, government agencies, and other departments. The Legal Division is also recruiting for additional roles within the RRU, including two Principal Lawyer roles and a Senior Lawyer role.
