AI Engineer – Build Real AI-Enabled Systems This is one of those rare roles where you can actually start applying AI in real-world systems, not just experimenting in isolation. Join a growing team at the early stages of their AI journey and help shape how it’s embedded into a live, customer-facing environment. You’ll be designing and building backend systems and integrations that enable AI to plug into real business workflows. Why this role matters This isn’t about maintaining legacy systems or working on isolated features. It’s about building the foundations that allow AI to be used across a business by connecting systems, enabling automation, and improving how platforms operate at scale. You’ll be working on backend services, APIs, and integrations that support emerging AI use cases. The AI side is evolving, so while you’ll get exposure to things like agents and automation workflows, the real impact comes from building the systems that make those capabilities possible. There’s AI in the stack, but you don’t need to be an expert. What matters is curiosity, initiative, and a desire to learn how it can be applied in production environments. You’ll thrive here if you: Have strong experience in backend-heavy roles using Python and/or Node Have worked on APIs, integrations, or distributed systems Have experience building and shipping features end-to-end Have worked in cloud environments (AWS, Azure or GCP) Are curious about AI and have experimented with tools like OpenAI, Copilot, Claude, or similar Bonus points if you’ve had exposure to event-driven systems, microservices, or early-stage AI/LLM integrations. What’s in it for you Real impact – you’ll be building systems that actually get used, not just prototypes Technical growth – work across backend, integrations, and emerging AI use cases Ownership – small team, high autonomy, real input into technical direction Future-focused work – opportunity to grow into AI-enabled engineering as the space evolves Interested: Apply now or reach out directly to me (karl@theonset.com.au) for more information
