Title: Head of Learning Area - Humanities and Social Sciences

Branch: Churchlands Senior High School

Division: Independent Public School - North Metropolitan Education Region

Salary: Level 3, $137,428 - $150,385 per annum (pro-rata) (SEA GA 2023)

This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 1, 2026

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated, dynamic, and innovative Head of Learning Area (HOLA) with exceptional teaching and learning skills to lead our team of Humanities and Social Sciences Teachers. The successful applicant should have solid qualities and capacity in curriculum leadership, effective team management, and strategic and operational planning processes responsive to student performance data and information.

As a curriculum leader, the HOLA of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) would provide professional leadership to specialist subject teachers within the learning area and provide up-to-date information on relevant specialist curriculum issues. The successful applicant will, in collaboration with the leadership team, provide strong educational leadership in the school and the community by developing and promoting shared ownership of the school vision and strategic direction. You would also be responsible for implementing and managing elements of the school business plan relevant to the HASS Learning Area.

The successful applicant will ideally have the competency to teach to Year 12 Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) level in at least one HASS course offered at Churchlands SHS – Accounting and Finance; Business Management and Enterprise; Economics; Geography; Modern History; Politics and Law; and Philosophy and Ethics. You will be an effective leader who can oversee a vibrant HASS team to deliver high-quality curriculum and programs, keeping abreast of latest developments in the HASS Learning Area.

Qualifications and Capabilities

The successful applicant will ideally:

- Be able to teach to Year 12 ATAR level in at least one HASS course listed above.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and manage a vibrant HASS team.
- Be innovative, knowledgeable, and possess thorough understanding of instructional and curriculum leadership.
- Keep abreast of the latest developments pertaining to the HASS Learning Area.
- Demonstrate curriculum leadership, strategic planning, and effective use of student performance data.

- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
- Hold registration with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia
- Obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start
- Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before you start.
