Who we are
NORSTA Northeast - located in Cairns - is a wholly owned subsidiary of NORSTA Maritime Pty Ltd, an Australian company. NORSTA operates in North-Eastern Australia and Northern Australia as the Royal Australian Navy’s Regional Maintenance Provider (RMP). Our mission is to provide essential maintenance and sustainment services for naval vessels in the region.
NOTE: As a condition of this role, you must be able to obtain (and hold) Baseline Defence security clearance, which requires Australian Citizenship. A National Police Check will also be undertaken.
Job Summary (Based in Cairns)
As a Project Finance Officer, you will work within a dedicated team of maritime professionals supporting maintenance services for a Royal Australian Navy vessel. This is a six-month fixed-term opportunity based in Cairns.
This role supports the effective financial management of Maintenance Services projects from initiation through to completion. You will assist in keeping projects on track by monitoring expenditure, maintaining accurate financial records and working across teams to support project and financial outcomes.
A key part of the role is managing and maintaining financial data within established tools, ensuring information is accurate, up to date and reliable. You will review data, identify inconsistencies or variances, and communicate these clearly to stakeholders to support resolution and informed decision-making.
This position suits someone who enjoys working with detail, takes pride in accuracy, and is confident working with data in a practical, hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain and manage the Project Cost Sheet (PCS), ensuring all financial data is accurate, current and complete
* Monitor project expenditure against budgets and identify cost variances or risks early
* Analyse financial data to support project performance, forecasting and decision-making
* Investigate and report on cost anomalies, providing clear commentary to stakeholders
* Collaborate with Maintenance and Finance teams to support project financial outcomes
* Provide financial insights and reporting to assist discussions with suppliers and external stakeholders
Your Experience
You bring solid experience as a bookkeeper or finance officer, with a strong track record working with financial data in a practical, hands-on environment. Experience in project-based accounting will be highly regarded.
You are confident working in Excel and comfortable navigating large data sets, using tools such as formulas, filtering and pivot tables to maintain accuracy and draw insights. You have a sharp eye for detail and the analytical ability to identify trends, inconsistencies and variances.
You take pride in maintaining high standards of financial integrity, asking questions where needed to ensure data is accurate and complete. You are self-sufficient and organised, while also contributing positively within a collaborative, team-focused environment.
Key Skills
* Strong Excel capability, including data manipulation and use of formulas and pivot tables
* Experience working with and maintaining large data sets
* Proficiency across Microsoft Office
* Strong numerical reasoning and attention to detail
* Exposure to financial systems such as SAP or similar
Qualifications:
* Certificate IV in Finance/Accounting/ Bookkeeping
