Why ASH?
Alice Springs Hospital (ASH) is a 200+ bed regional referral hospital providing acute and specialist services across a vast and unique footprint, servicing a 1.6 million km2 catchment across Central Australia and covering more than 60% of the Northern Territory.
While the township itself has a modest population, ASH supports a dynamic and often transient population of more than 42,000 people across remote and regional communities. Pharmacists here are embedded within multidisciplinary teams and practise with genuine clinical autonomy, contributing meaningfully across inpatient, outpatient and specialist services.
ASH manages high‐acuity presentations across one of the largest hospital catchments in the world. From advanced renal disease and remote retrieval interfaces to severe infectious diseases, high‐risk maternity, mental health and paediatrics, the scope and complexity of medicine encountered here are unlike anywhere else in Australia.
ASH supports one of the most geographically remote ICUs in the world and one of the largest renal dialysis services in the Southern Hemisphere, creating a clinical environment that is diverse, challenging and professionally rewarding.
The breadth and acuity of presentations will genuinely accelerate your core clinical capabilities quickly. Hospital‐trained pharmacists ready to practise at full scope will strengthen their clinical reasoning, expand therapeutic depth and develop confidence managing complex patients within a structured and supportive environment. And yes, you can ride your bike to work in under 10 minutes.
Our Pharmacy Service at ASH
The ASH Pharmacy team are a collaborative and clinically engaged department with ward‐based clinical pharmacists, senior specialty pharmacists, intern pharmacists and experienced technicians working closely together. We are known for our strong team culture where pharmacists share knowledge openly, support one another and step in to help when it matters.
As an accredited AdPha Foundation Residency Program site supporting two resident positions, we value teaching, mentorship and continuous learning. Professional development is embedded within our service model, and we actively invest in our pharmacists to build confidence, capability and long‐term career progression.
Our regional pharmacy provides medicines and specialist advice to remote health clinics across NT, WA, SA and QLD border regions. Pharmacists also have the opportunity to support Tennant Creek Hospital on a rotational basis, travelling by air with the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) to provide clinical pharmacy services and strengthen regional care delivery. This exposure adds another dimension to practice, offering experience across multiple service settings within the Central Australian region.
Life in Central Australia
Central Australia offers a relaxed, outdoor lifestyle that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. The West MacDonnell Ranges are quite literally on your doorstep, with sunrise hikes before work and sunset swims at Ormiston Gorge part of everyday life. The Larapinta Trail stretches across the ranges for those who love multi‐day trekking, while countless camping spots and 4WD tracks invite weekend exploration.
Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon are within reach for long weekends, bucket‐list destinations for many, but simply road trips for you. Clear desert skies bring incredible stargazing, winter evenings around a campfire and a climate that encourages you to get outside.
Alice Springs has a vibrant and welcoming community, strong arts culture, local festivals, sporting competitions and excellent facilities. You will find great cafés, social sporting teams, gyms and cycling groups and plenty of opportunity to connect quickly. It's a place where professional growth and lifestyle genuinely intersect, where you can build serious clinical capability while still having space, time and adventure outside of work.
