What's the role? The Australian is seeking a sharp, driven and well-connected NSW Political Correspondent to lead our coverage of state politics for a discerning national audience. Based between Macquarie Street and The Australian’s Sydney bureau, the successful candidate will be a key member of the press gallery, responsible for delivering agenda-setting reportage on the Minns government and broader issues shaping New South Wales. The role also involves contributing to federal and national coverage, particularly where Commonwealth decisions intersect with state affairs. This is a dynamic and high-profile position offering the opportunity to break exclusive stories, provide authoritative political reporting, and shape the national conversation. The role suits an ambitious journalist who combines a deep understanding of NSW politics with the ability to write with clarity, urgency and insight for a national masthead. Responsibilities Provide accurate, timely and engaging coverage of NSW politics, with The Australian’s national readership front of mind. Be predominantly based at NSW Parliament, ensuring the state’s major political developments are covered with rigour and authority. Break exclusive stories and develop in-depth features that reveal the inner workings of government and the impact of policy across NSW communities. Work closely with the NSW bureau chief and collaborate with the Canberra bureau to contribute to federal coverage, where relevant to NSW. Contribute to major state-based news stories in tandem with colleagues in the Sydney bureau. File clean, accurate copy to deadline, in accordance with legal and editorial standards. Build and maintain a broad and trusted network of political, policy and community contacts. Ensure all content is published to a high digital standard, including story builds and audience engagement strategies. Who are you? Proven experience covering state or federal politics, or demonstrable knowledge of the state’s political landscape and key players. A strong record of breaking news and delivering exclusives at a national or major metropolitan outlet. An established network of contacts across politics, government, and the community sector. Solid digital journalism skills, or a willingness to develop proficiency in digital production and audience engagement tools. The ability to report on national and foreign affairs topics where they intersect with NSW politics and policy. Strong editorial judgement and a willingness to lead the news agenda. Sound knowledge of defamation law, court reporting restrictions and media codes of practice.
