Your new company
You will be joining a large Federal Government department with a strong focus on financial governance, accountability, and high quality reporting. The team is well established, collaborative, and offers hybrid working arrangements.
Your new role
As the APS6 Financial Accountant, you will play a key role in delivering the department's financial reporting obligations. Working within a team of around 15, you will support the preparation of annual financial statements, contribute to accounting file notes and position papers, and engage regularly with key stakeholders including the Australian National Audit Office.
Your responsibilities will include:
Preparing monthly financial results for reporting through the Central Budget Management System.
Completing monthly balance sheet reconciliations and preparing month-end journals.
Assisting with the development of high‑quality workpapers and supporting documentation.
Providing accurate financial reporting and accounting advice.
Building strong working relationships across the department and with external audit partners.
While the role has no formal people leadership duties, acting opportunities are available when the EL1 Manager is on leave, offering valuable exposure and development.
This position is strictly Canberra based and offers hybrid working of two days per week from home.
What you'll need to succeed
To excel in this APS6 Financial Accountant role, you will bring:
Ongoing APS employment status and eligibility for a Section 26 transfer.
A Baseline security clearance (or the ability to obtain one).
Strong financial accounting or financial reporting experience from within the APS.
A relevant accounting qualification, with CPA studies commenced or planned viewed favourably.
Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to contribute to position papers.
A strong work ethic, reliability, and the ability to thrive in a deadline‑driven environment.
